T H U R S D A Y , F E B R U A R Y 27, 1975 Hoodland fire board meets Your Phone Rates Are Going Up From the welter of information and misinformation we’ve read lately, we can’t even guess what we ll be paying for telephone service a few months hence. But we do know that if General Telephone’s suggestions are adopted, it’ll be plenty. Hearings currently are under way on the rate increases. They are being held by the State Public Utility Commission which must make a recommendation on which any in- crease will be based. There has been a lot of confusion over just what General is seeking. According to Gresham Division Manager Henry Kutschia, private party rates in Gresham would go up 29.4 per cent if the General request is adopted. If you have a two-party phone, it would be a 32.6 per cent increase and a 36.1 per cent increase for four-party residential. These are just the basic rates. Long distance calls, etc., are not included. If you live in Sandy, the increase would be 12.8 per cent, 12.7 per cent and 10.9 per cent, respectively. Sandy rates are higher than those in Gresham and would remain so. A one-party business phone in Gresham would go up 44.8 per cent; two party 33.7 per cent and four-party business 69.8 per cent. In Sandy, the increases would be 28.4 per cent, 15.3 per cent and 32.1 per cent. The company has made no request for increases in yellow section ad vertising nor for 15c pay phones, common now in Washington state. G eneral says the tremendous growth in its service areas, Gresham and Beaverton to name just two, has necessitated a huge capital in vestment. With the cost of financing, labor, supplies, equipment, etc., going through the roof, a rate in crease not only is justified but ab solutely necessary. Whatever justification, it seems to us that General’s requests are way out of line. If everyone upped their selling price by 44.8 per cent (as General proposes for one-party business phones), we’d soon be out of business. Admittedly, General's costs have gone up and some sort of an ad justment is necessary. But we think it would be unconscionable to allow the type of increase General proposes.
