A m em orial b ill asking
Congress to expand the

food stamp program has been
sponsored by Rep B ill Gran
nell, D-Coos County.
Several hundred rece ntly

workers have been denied food

Oregon. The bill is aimed at
helping these workers, many of
whom own property that now
disqualifies them.
“ i t ’s ironic that we don't help
the very people the economic
crunch is hurting the m ost,"
Grannell said. "M any of the
layed o ff m ill and fa cto ry
workers are the same ones who
have supported programs like
this through their tax dollars,
programs that in turn have
helped many people. I f we can't
help these people when they’re
down, then we in turn are not
doing our job.”
