A ccordin g to an O 6 U e x tension re p o rt on the 1978 a g r i c u l t u r a l s itu a tio n and outlook, m ilk prices re c e iv e d by d a iry m e n h ave not kept pace w ith the in fla tio n in cost. In creases in g ra in and con c e n tra te p ric e s h ave been a m a jo r co n trib u to r to theae coat increases. H o w ever, prices for m ast o th e r production inputs a re also up. T h e econom ic squeeze has ju s t begun to be re fle c te d in O regon's m ilk output, Nelson says. P r e lim in a r y indications a re that to ta l m ilk output in Oregon fo r th e firs t 11 m onths of 1974 w as up s lig h tly com p a re d to 1973. H o w e v e r, th e e s tim a te of O regon m ilk p ro duction fo r D e c e m b e r is a c tu a lly down one m illio n pounds fro m a y e a r ago. U S m ilk production in 1974 was dow n s lig h tly fro m 1973 and 4 to & p e r cent leas than 1972. D e c re a s in g num bers of d a ir y cows is the tre n d in both O regon and the n ation D e c e m b e r m ilk production p e r pro du ction p e r cow in O regon was down fro m a y e a r ago, perhap s as a re s u lt of a d ecrease in the le v el of g ra in an d c o n c e n tra te fed p e r cow , Nelson believes T h e high g ra in prices h av e accounted fo r the lo w e r feed ing ra te s , it w as production p e r cow .
