beard-like growths by their
correct name "lichens."
True mosses are greenish
and found growing on the north
side of trees and on the soil.
They fo rm reproductive
structures on small stems, a
process lichens cannot carry
out because they are not a true
plant but the result of a fungus
and alga growing together as
one plant in a sim biotic
relationship.
Lichens may be found on
unpainted board fences, posts
or on the bark of trees since
they are saprophytic and cause
no harm to the host. Heavy
growths of lichens usually
follow reasons characterized
by extended rainy periods in
the late spring and summer.
B u rkh art assures owners
that no harm will come to the
trees as a result of the growth
being present. Since most
orchards are sprayed with
copper or lime and sulfur
mixtures, lichens are kept at a
minimum in comparison to an
older orchard suffering from
neglect.
Environmental
conditions
and not the growths are
responsible for decline and a
death of trees.
