10 - SANDY (Ore.) POST Thur«.. Feb. 6. 1978 (Sec 1) More bragging due on state's crops "O regon needs more salesmen on the streets of the world telling the story of the superiority of the state's agricultural products," says Jay Glatt, director of the Oregon D epartm ent of A g ric u ltu re ’s A g ricu ltu ral Development Program He said greater emphasis on worldwide sales is a must to help solve declining agricultural prices and is one of the answers to a healthy economy for the state The decline in farm prices now being experienced in the face of a world food shortage is a paradox with fa r reaching effects. "The concern.” Glatt said, "centers around the fact that prices received by farmers continue to fall—cattle prices are lowest in three years and wheat prices have dropped 23 per cent in the last 11 weeks— and at the same tune world supplies of many farm com modities are below a safe level. “ It is an unsettling situation for farmers and can affect cropping plans for the 1975 crop year, since the price declines can render some crops uneconomical. The squeeze between lower farm prices and increased costs can result in fa rm e rs turning to crops requiring the least capital input in fe rtiliz e rs , fuel and machinery " Glatt, whose office works with the state’s agricultural industry in development of new markets for its products, says expansion of world markets will help bolster prices for agricultural products and ease the uncertainty over the in dustry’s future. This in turn will increase the world's food supply and in directly the consumer at home will benefit by the increased production th at w ill be generated. "Consumers all over the world are feeling the squeeze of tight money. We need to direct our merchandising at making them aware of the fact that our high standards mean they will get more servings per unit than from the products of our competitors, have less waste and that our processing techniques offer longer shelf life." Reminding that agriculture is such a dominant force in Oregon, with so many in- dustries dependent on it, Glatt said: ”We can't look at this as an economic loas affecting only the state’s farmers. Oregon's farm income has a serious impact on the rest of the state's economy. In 1974 the farm gate income in Oregon reached 91.1 billion This money turns over four to seven times within a community by the time a product is m arketed. The spinoff from the farm dollar is vital to our economic health here in Oregon,” he said. TR Y TH E CLASSIFIEDS Camp Fire candy goes on sale Feb. 6 It's Camp Fire girls candy sale time again.
