20 - SAN DY (Or«.) POST Thur»., Jen. 30, 1976 (S«e. 1) [ ‘ Heli’s Notes ' By NELL HOW E • Hood-Land Reporter Charlie VanHandel is very ill in the hospital We hope that Charlie improves and will be i able to come home very soon. Being a bit short of things to , write about, I have decided to I look backwards instead. I Back in November of 1956 I some of us gals on the mountain decided we needed a newspaper of our own. We took it upon ourselves to print one Our first issue, consisting of two mimeographed pages, was not what one would call a rousing success, as the machine we had was old, and the print was very hard to read. In January of 195« the following appeared in the paper ‘Timberline Lodge is planning on building a beautiful outdoor swimming pool, ad joining the lodge, this year It will be heated and open the year around.” By this time we had sold advertising, drew our own ads, and had finally worked up enough capital to buy a new second-hand m im eograph machine and a postal permit. We were growing. Rhododendron Booster club, Mountain Grange, Brightwood Extension, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and others, all having articles in each edition. So, in March of 1961, we turned our assets and equip ment over to the Sandy Post, including our subscription list, and typed out our final issue I found where Jim Henry, in March of 195« took off for Los Angeles and Phoenix on a vacation, and forgot to take his good clothes, so Marie had to pack them up and send them to him (Lucky the postage then wasn't what it is now ) What busy organisations we had them, Wy'east Gun Club, Harriet Day. Barbara Lymp, Marty Ruegg and myself had kept the paper going for five years. Pretty good for a group that didn't have the faintest idea what they were doing, and enjoyed every minute of it. If anyone would ever like to browse through the back issues, of the now passe. Hood- Land News, I have them all In a notebook in order and you are welcome to borrow them Will have to go back and look up some more goodies. So many of the people that were in the paper then have either moved, or gone to that place in the sky. but are still remem bered by so many of us SENTRY HAS FANTASTIC MEAT VALUES!
