QiUtken are children and not (yet) astronomers, physicists, etc., so they can't quote you the figures of light-years and the improbability of space ships from other galaxies reaching earth and so on. But most of them are students of history (however reluctantly in some cases) and there aren't man; 13-yaar-dds who can't remind you that Gallileo was excommunicated for daring to entertain the theory that the earth revolved around the sun rather than vice versa, and they seem more willing than adults to follow Gallileo's lead and speculate that maybe, Just maybe in spite of a ll we TH IN K we know, there may be "others" out there, somewhere, who know a little bit more and are, therefore, able to do what all right- thinking scientists "know” is impossible. And I, for one, wish writers would stop trying to stifle young minds before they reach out Into the unknown with u nim ag in ative, but known! known! facts about swamp gas. Still, I suppose if there is a budding Einstein out there reading such books isn't going to throw him off stride. Mind you, I don't hold belief In space ships as an Article of Faith— I'm an agnostic about the whole thing. But I don't discount the possibility just because "they" haven't landed an ambassador In Washington, D C , either.
