In a heavy skillet or saucepan
melt W cube of butter or
margarine, add 3 tablespoons
granulated sugar and cook and
stir imtil sugar is dissolved
Shred « s m a ll red cabbage
thinly with a sharp knife. Put
into butter-sugar mixture. Add
V« cup vinegar and enough
water to keep from scorching.
Cut in one peeled chopped
apple. Simmer for a couple of

sheriff's reports.

1975 for more than 700 West
Coast tree farmers in Western
Oregon

Object of the tree race,
sponsored in the Pacific North­
west by Industrial Forestry
Association in cooperation with
American Forest Institute, is to
determine which Douglas fir in
the region can add most new
height growth by the contest
deadline, Oct 31, 1975.

prize is 100 pounds of organic
fertilizer, offered to the runner
up in hopes that it will improve
his p erform ance in future
contests
Purpose of the contest is to
dem onstrate the incredible
timber growing capacity of the
Douglas F ir region, that area
west of the Cascades in Oregon
and
Washington
which
foresters contend is one of the
most productive tree growing
areas of the world. Douglas fir
on good sites in the region can
glow three feet or more in
height per year Height growth
is measured in the length of the
“leader,” the new spire of
growth sent up each spring
from the topmost whorl of buds.
