Hoodland Happenings County |ail begins volunteer program

HOODLAND F ’ RE C HIEF BOB FRY announced this week the
new officers for the department They are assistant chiefs Jin«
Reik and Riley Caton, captains Gary Cleland, Bob Mitchell and
Gordon Clausing, and Lt. Hank Emery This brings the total
members up to 27 firefighters The new training schedule started
Tuesday and will cover basic fire fighting techniques. The
department is full at the present and all future applicants will be
put on the waiting list. In his other capacity as a state forestry fire
warden Fry wanted to emphasize that forest lands are closed to
chain saws, fires of any kind except in designated campgrounds
and motorized vehicles are required to carry a bucket, axe, and
shovel.
THE NORTHWEST STEELHEADERS, MT. HOOD CHAPTER
will hold their annual fish and oyster feed at the Lions Hall,
Wemme, tomorrow night, Friday Sept. 27. Tickets will be «3 50
and serving will begin at 6:30 p.m. Cliff Trow land with a hand
picked crew of Steelheaders will spark-plug the event
A NEW OWNER HAS TAKEN OVER the “ Sno Bird” drive-in at
Rhody, G. Kirkpatrick. His family includes MaYci who helps in
the business and Mike 16, Scott 15 and Linda 10 The popular pair
from Portland intend to expand the business. They feature
chicken to go and new hours are, 7 days from 10 a m. until 9 p.m.
RICK THORSON RESIGNED from the Forest Service to take a
new position with the Oregon State Forest Service at Astoria.
ALAN JENSEN, MT HOOD REAL ESTATE BROKER,
believes that lightning can indeed strike in two places After
suffering the indignity of having his home rocked by dynamite
blasts, he had two boats stolen from their moorage at Trillium
Lake. He is offering 5100 00 for information and the recovery of

THE STATE POLICE REPORTS a brush fire near M iller
Road. The state police and Hoodland fire department, with the
Oregon State Forest Department were able to put it out with little
damage.
TOM AND R EVA COX HAVE A NEW ARRIVAL, a baby boy.
IN T H E PAST THIS COLUMN has been successful in locating
lost dogs and cats This time it's a new twist. A male Irish setter
has been found, a little lean but well-trained and obedient. The
owner may recover it by calling Mrs. Bob Schoenhut at Wemme,

C U F F TROWLAND CELEBRATED his birthday at the
Whistle Stop — birthday cake and the whole ball of wax — sorry to
miss that one.
GEORGE BRUNS, MUSICAL director at Disneyland, sat in
with Rich at the ZigZag Cellar Room and the music was really
great Saturday night.
DENNIS LUCE HOODLAND ROOFING CO. back from
Portland after a stint in the hospital. Nice to see Denny back
playing in the tar.
JUST HEARD FROM THE RANGER STATION that we have
three new people. They are employed on project crews. They are
Trevor Pelling, Nancy McAbery, Wendy Evans, and Kim
Brandell.
DAVE STEVENS, FOREST SERVICE EM PLO YE is returning
to Nehalem to live. He will work in his fam ily’s sawmill at
Manzinita
A HONDA POWER GENERATOR was stolen from the Green
River Canyon campground. This was the power source for the
water supply. Water to the thirsty campers was restored by your
Forest Service however.
ABOUT BEING THIRSTY-VandaIs cut the pins on the gates to
the Bull Run water shed this week using an acetylene torch.
HOT W EATHER BROUGHT HOARDS OF PEOPLE to the
mountain last week. Trillium Lake was filled to capacity with
picnickers and swimmers.
THE MT. HOOD WOMENS CLUB have completed plastic
coating their tennis courts near Welches. They were pronounced
excellent by a player who chooses to remain anonymous.

MANY OF TH E OLDTIMERS ON THE MOUNTAIN were
pleasantly surprised to see Matt Meehan out re-newing old
friendships at Barlow and Brightwood. He was accompanied by
his attractive daughter, Mickey Chase Mickey has been
housekeeping for M att during his eye surgery and recovery. She
has since returned to her home in Loa Altos, Calif. Matt will be
remembered as a very able negotiator for the Longshoremen’s
Union prior to his retirement We wish him complete recovery.
DR. AND MRS. LEO LYM PH were visited by their daughter
Suzanne from San Jose, Calif. Suzanne is studying to become a
pharmacist.
K EN CUSHMAN, MOUNTAIN CONTRACTOR and Mt. Hood’s
answer to Evel Kneivel took a spill on his big 450 bike. A skinned
right arm and a pair of broken handlebars were the only damage.
He lost control in some loose gravel traveling at very low speed.
C L IF F McDOWELL BACK ON THE MOUNTAIN after 19 days
in a Portland hospital. Cliff will have to return again for more
surgery.

orientation session At OSU
before going to the host farms.
The young men are par­
ticularly interested in poultry,
livestock and h orticu ltu ral
operations, said Monroe. After
two years in Oregon, they will
return to the Philippines to
farm with government support.
Monroe, now a consultant for
international programs for the
National 4-H Foundation,
points out that the trainees will
work in re tirn for training,
experience and the opportunity
to learn about American far­
ming method» so they may help
increase their own country’«
food.

new volunteers program aimed
at providing recreation for
juveniles in detention.
Clackamas County has no
separate ju ven ile detention
facility. Juveniles in need of
secure custody are placed in a
separate section of the county
ja il set aside for them

exercise outside their area

juvenile's average stay is
short, the hours of those days
drag by very slowly. Often
these young people resort to
defacing jail property to relieve
the boredom.
In an effort to provide
youngsters
with
needed
exercise and to
reduce
destruction of property, the two
agencies are asking for
volunteers
to
supervise
youngsters for a few hours of
recreation each day except
Monday and Wednesday.

crafts or games and floor space
for other activities. In the
detention area itself, there is a
smaller space and table The
jail has given permission for

boys will be allowed to play
ball. Projected hours for the
program are 9:30 to 11:30 a m.

will be kept separated during

formal supervision provided by
