Hank Emery This brings the total members up to 27 firefighters The new training schedule started Tuesday and will cover basic fire fighting techniques. The department is full at the present and all future applicants will be put on the waiting list. In his other capacity as a state forestry fire warden Fry wanted to emphasize that forest lands are closed to chain saws, fires of any kind except in designated campgrounds and motorized vehicles are required to carry a bucket, axe, and shovel. Clackamas County has no separate ju ven ile detention facility. Juveniles in need of secure custody are placed in a separate section of the county ja il set aside for them P resently there is no op portunity fo r juveniles to exercise outside their area Although in numbers of days a M i u a n i l a 'a o i- o e n n o c »a.> ;<■ juvenile's average stay is short, the hours of those days drag by very slowly. Often these young people resort to defacing jail property to relieve the boredom. In an effort to provide youngsters with needed exercise and to reduce destruction of property, the two agencies are asking for volunteers to supervise youngsters for a few hours of recreation each day except Monday and Wednesday. Juveniles will have use of the Hov nnm u /h m h h a s a n in o - day r room, which has a ping pong table as well as a table for crafts or games and floor space for other activities. In the detention area itself, there is a smaller space and table The jail has given permission for TV sets to be mounted on the wall of the detention area where the children now spend all of their time There is an outdoor grassy area where the boys will be allowed to play ball. Projected hours for the program are 9:30 to 11:30 a m. and 1 to 3 p.m., and possibly an P a rlv V P n in o ««K t« inn a « w a l l early P evening session as well The detention facility has capacity for eight boys and six girls The girls and boys are housed on different floors and will be kept separated during recreation hours. Children are not detained there long The average stay for juveniles for 1973 was 2.5 days Most often these children are either being held until a hearing or are waiting to be released to their parents or guardians with formal or in formal supervision provided by th a n n rt V n ln n tP « the p court. Volunteers are provided with an orientation to the juvenile department and the jail They will work clwely with the jail personnel and will have contact with the juvenile court counselors as needed Usually, volunteers will be assigned to work in pairs.
