Thur»., Sgpt. 19, 1974 (S«c 1) SANDY (O rt.) POST - 17 Play Forest Grove Friday Pioneers miss McMinnville DUB HAYES, goes for more yards In last week's season opener against Me- Minnville. Hayes trailed Bill Gregus in total yards gained with 89. Friday the They might have dropped their opener 28 to 14, but head coach Forest Allen isn’t one bit disappointed in his team. “You’ve got to give Mac (McMinnville) a lot of credit, they’re a good football team, with a lot of talent,” reflected the coach. He said tackling, fumbles and penalties during key situations hurt Sandy's effort, but added these all three sore sport can be mended in practice. The pioneers are preparing this week to take on Forest Grove in an away game Friday. Allen is excited about playing Forest Grove—last year they stole the league title from him The Forest Grove game will be held at Pacific University in Forest G rove, not at the visitor’s high school. (PostPhoto) Mike Kostrba, Sandy High athletic director, and coach Allen both said they were pleased with last Friday night’s large Turnout. Standing room only greeted Sandy rooters. Game stats indicate Sandy fa ire d better than the scoreboard m ight indicate against the big Coast Division power. Under the accute leadership of quarterback John Alps, Sandy pushed for 362 total yards to Mac’s 346 offensive total. The home team red jerseys also collected 11 first downs to Mac's nine first downs. Bill Gregus, who along with Jon M iller scored Sandy’s pair of touch downs, led his team in total ground gained with 189 yards Allen praised both Gregus and Dub Hayes who through the blocks in front of the swift Sandy half back. Other kind words from the coach went to senior Alps for “ doing a super job of moving the offense," and to Jon Miller. You would have never guessed M iller missed last Freshmen meet season because of an injury. The senior end went both ways Friday night, scored a touch down, and as the coach puts it “did an outstanding job.” Allen said his defense needs to toughen up, although he accredited them with stopping a couple tense Mac goal line drives la te in the fourth quarter.
