are showing the brilliant yellow
color of tansy in full bloom
these warm July days. The
time has come and gone when
these landowners could have
controlled the weed easily by
proper spraying practices. Now
we have a situation where only
the application of PP and B will
work For the uninitiated, PP
and B means ‘pull, pile and
burn."
Although not s tric tly en­
forced, there is a law which
says it is illegal to allow tansy
to seed. To avoid em ­
barrassment and the possible
fines associated with this law, I
suggest you check for ta n s y -
evident by lush green foliage
and bright yellow flowers If
some is found, recruit family
mem bers or h ire help if
necessary to pull all of these
weeds from your property
The tansy ragwort problem
has grown from a very minor
start in
1922 until the
disasterous situation we have
in 1974. All efforts of individual
property owners, government
agencies and corporations
seem to be too little too late as
we attempt to control this
weed. I believe the time has
come to in itia te control
programs that will involve all
citizens.
The county should have a
taxing program for every
property owner in the county to
share in the cost of controlling
this poisonous weed. We have
diking districts, fire districts,
vector control districts and
other types of taxing bodies to
which we all contribute. If an
assessment were made on all
property
in
Clackamas
County, this money could hire
a d e q u a te
m a n p o w e r,
machines, chemicals and
develop a program adequate to
do the job
We would like to hear from
fa rm organizations, civic
groups or individuals who have
positive suggestions for con­
ta in in g ,
controlling
or
eliminating this plant. These
steps are necessary to protect
our sizable beef, diary and
horse enterprises. I f these
industries are allowed to die,
our standard of living will
surely suffer

Haas, 67, Brightwood, were
held July 27 in the chapel of
Sandy Funeral Home.
He died in Gresham July 24.
Haas was born in Brainerd,
Minn.
On June 6, 1936, he married
Myrtle Price. They lived in
Minnesota where Haas was
employed until 1945 when he
entered the Army.
A fte r his discharge, he
returned to Minnesota with his
family. In 1961 they moved to
Oregon where he continued
working as a heavy equipment
operator in Corvallis.
After his wife died in 1967,
Haas moved to Gresham and
began working at Mt. Hood
Community College.
On July 2, 1970, he was
married to Lydia Bowman
They made their home at
Brightwood, and Haas con­
tinued to work at the college
until his retirement in 1973.
Survivors include his wife,
Lydia; three children, Betty
VanGeest, M innesota, Ray
Haas, Florida, and Kim Haas,
P ortlan d ; a step-daughter,
Carol Kuzmesky, Boring; his
m other, K ittie Haas, M in ­
nesota; a sister, Fay Barrett,
Minnesota; six grandchildren;
and two great-grandchildren.

Services for Lillian Ferris, 65
In terlach en R d., T ro utdale,
were held July 29 at the Odd
Fellow s C em etery in The
Dalles. She was 85.
Born in Grand Rapids, Wis.,
she was the daughter of George
W. and M aria Shorey. She died
July 26.
In the early 1900s, she and her
family moved to Portland.
They later homesteaded in
Condon and Arlington and in
1943 Mrs. Ferris moved to the
Salem area to be near her
fa m ily , shortly a fte r her
husband, Clarence, died.
The couple had been married
Jan. 9, 1909, in Portland.
She moved to the Troutdale
area in 1946.
She was a former member of
the Order of Odd Fellows and
was a member of the Sandy
Baptist Church.
Survivors
include:
her
children, Chester, Pendleton,
Roy, Salem, Walter, Troutdale,
and Marion, Portland; a sister,
Mary Caldwell, Portland; 12
g randchildren; and three
great-grandchildren.
