s » » 20 - SANDY (Ore.) POST Thur»., March 21, 1974 (Sac. 1) e ^ N e ll s r By NELL HOWE , Hood-Land Reporter M e rt Wheeler is coming along fine after major surgery a week ago Tuesday I can’t believe we had a day like last Monday. Of course, we may be lucky and have one again on Tuesday, but Monday is when I am writing this, so it is the only day I can report. I got out and started a big bonfire with trash, branches, paper and trimmed the rose bushes and all kinds of goodies like that. I even got my bike out Hood River Hospital and it hasn’t been very convenient to contact him. However, Emma has kept in touch and lets us know how he is coming along. It sure will be good to see them home again. In the meantime, some of us have been taking care of the shop and seeing that the house is not left unattended We are I able to weekend, and took a ride. It was a beautiful day and really felt like spring just might have arrived in spite of itself While eating an apple, I remembered the days when we were kids and lived at the Tawney Hotel. We would go down in the old root cellar and get an apple that tasted like no apple ever has since. It was crunchy and juicy. Or we would get a carrot out of the sawdust it was b iried in and it would be so very sweet The delightful smell of the root c e lla r can not be described. It has to be sensed and felt to be appreciated. We also watched Grandma Tawney skim the cream off the milk. It was so thick it wouldn't pour. You had to scoop it up with a spoon. We had homemade cottage cheese. We also had fun when the hogs were butchered We held the casings for the homemade sausage. That's another flavor that cannot be copied. Those are just a few of things that were really better in the good old days. Excuse all that rambling, it must be spring fever or old age, I ’m not sure which. Our very deepest sympathy to Selma Volbrecht for the loss of her husband, Walter. The Volbrechts have been members of the mountain community for many years.
