Thur» , March 21, 1974 (Sec. 1) SAN DY (Ora l POST - 15 VA does counseling regularly by phone 4-H News The March meeting for the Goats-C-Does 4-H Dairy Goat Club was held March 14 at the Glenn Dickman home in Sandy At the meeting, the group discussed the correct way of writing reasons in judging They also judged some goats for new mem bers for demonstration purposes. The group will be going to the Canby F a ir Grounds on March 30 for a livestock judging day. There the group will judge steers, hog, hay, cows, cuts of meat, doe goats, milk and grain. On April 20, the group plans to go to St. Helen's for a dairy goat fie ld day. The next meeting of the group will be on April 18 at the Ernest Boyer home in Sandy. The Veterans Administration (V A ) is a big telephone user as it strives to make its services as close to the veteran as his telephone Veterans benefits counselors at 58 regional offices handle more than 1.2 million calls each month. Requests for assistance range from jobs to schools to claims for compensation or pension checks Donna M Arndt, director of the Portland regional office, states that public calls for Oregon averaged 15,075 during the six-month period ending December 31, 1973. January increased to 20,590. Telephone calls for the six- month period ending December 31, 1973 were 13.2 per cent higher than the previous six month average of 13,321, the VA o fficial reported. A ll in dications point to a continued increase as the P ortlan d regional office responds to an Oregon veteran population of more than 345,000 men and women and their dependents Veterans in the state of Oregon have access to toll-free direct lines to the Portland regional office by sim ply dialing a local number or through use of the 800 area code. The toll-free VA numbers are listed in local telephone d irectories under U. S. Government or newly installed numbers can be obtained from d ire c to ry assistance. The phone listings are: Portland - 221-2431; and from any phone in the state - 1-800- 452-7276. Telephone service is provided weekdays from 7:45 a m. until 5 p.m. The extension of phone service beyond the regional office closing time at 4:15 p m insures persons working any shift would be able to contact the Portland regional office N ationally, job assistance continues to be the most popular subject in telephone interviews The VA attempts to place veterans in positions available from its own job bank or offer referral service to local employment service offices In the first four months of fiscal year 1974, a total of 10,380 veterans were placed in new jobs through VA help This was 7.6 per cent more jobs than were gained during a similar period in the previous year. More than 100,000 veterans College reports board openings F iv e positions on the Clackamas Community College Board of Education will be on the May 7 ballot following action by the board at its meeting Wednesday, March 13. Appearing on the ballot will be Milwaukie Zone 1 for a four- year term and Milwaukie Zone 2 for a two-year term. Zone 3 in the Oak Grove area will be for a three- year term. Zone 5 in West Linn for a four-year term and Zone 6 in Estacada for a three-year term will also be on the ballot. In other action taken by the board a recommendation for a $10 per quarter tuition increase failed to gain support and a decision to set a tax base figure was postponed until a special m eeting set fo r Tuesday, March 19 at 7:30 p.m. Approval was given for the purchase of an Organic Carbon Analyzer, a testing device to be used in the college’s en v ir o n m e n ta l te c h n o lo g y laboratories. Scott. Westley is a Republican. Westley took a seldom-used route to put his name on the ballot—that of nomination by petition. , The candidate’s volunteer committee obtained nearly 700 signatures (168 are required) during a concerted door-to-door e ffo rt on two weekends. Signatures were obtained from 21 of the 29 precincts in District 25 According to W estley’s campaign coordinator, R. Scott Montgom ery, “ A candidate who pays the filing fee has bought his place on the ballot. A candidate who is placed on the ballot by the will of the people - by petition - has earned the honor of seeking public office. Westley, a fourth generation Oregonian, was raised in Astoria. He holds a bachelor's degree in business ad ministration and a master’s degree in public ad ministration. He is a U.S. Air Force veteran. He serves on the board of directors of the Clackamas County Comprehensive Health Planning Association and the government affairs committee of the Portland Council of Hospitals He also was ap pointed by Multnomah County to the County Welfare Com mission. In announcing his candidacy, Westley stated, “The next ten years will be the most critical in the history of Clackamas County.
