March 7 .1 9 7 4 (Sec. 1) S A N D Y (Ore.) »»OST - 9 Thun., March 7, 1974 ( P a n c a k e fe e d Sandy team has chance at state tournament The Coast Valley Division title holding Sandy basket- bailers are just one win away from going to the state tour nament. They w ill play the Coast Division leader Dallas Dragons Monday night (game location s till unannounced at press tim e). Even if they would drop this one to the Dragons, Coach Jim Kitchen’s team would still have one more shot at the state playoffs. They’ve been here before. The last two years the Pioneer roundballers have made it to one win away from state play and had their efforts defeated. ALLEN N IP P E R T , holder of the Coast Valley League scoring title airbounds a shot against the Dallas Dragons in season play two weeks ago. Pioneers Gary Blount, 24, and Steve Konell, 14, move in for possible rebound. Sandy meets the Dragons again this Monday night to determine the winning team title for the Coast Valley League. If the Pioneers win they will qualify for the upcoming state championships. (Post Photo) “We re healthy and playing as well as we ever have all year,” said Kitchen, “We've had the week off There’s just no reason why we can’t get a win.” The Pioneers finished their victorious season quite ap p ro p ria te ly last Thursday night, flooring the visiting Silverton team, 89-49 The Pioneers unselfishly fed to Allen Nippert throughout the game, ensuring his prestigious title as the Coast V a lle y Division’s top scorer ahead of Dallas’s Mitch Posey. Nippert sank a walloping 41 points, easily securing the title. The last time Sandy made it to the state finals was eleven long years ago when they placed third. This year, Coach Kitchen is confident his experienced senior crew w ill get into the play at Portland’s Memorial Colesium. Other point makers against the embarrassed Foxes were: Dan Turin 8, Steve Konnell 9, Gary Blount 8, Jon M iller 8, Larry Dahrens 2, John Al; Alps 3, Craig Lundy 4, Jeff Jackson 2, and Kevin Kuzmesky 4.
