Clackamas county
feels fuel pinch
“ We're in trouble,’’ said John
M cIntyre last week concerning
the energy crisis and fuel pinch
in Clackamas County M cIn
tyre is the county's director of
public works
M cIntyre was referring to the
new federal directive which
allows allocation of only 72 per
cent of the gasoline received by
the county in 1972
To complicate the m atter, the
directive also switched fuel
suppliers from 1973 to 1972
contractors
"This required Standard Oil
to drop us and for Shell Oil to
become our supplier for 1974,’’
McIntyre said
The result of this county gas
shortage is being felt now as
m otorists sw erve to m iss
potholes and broken pavement
on county maintained roads
“ We have over 100 miles of
roads that need repair due to
recent frosts, but we can’t send
crews out because we'd run out
of gas in two or three days. We
consider the condition a hazard
to the public and are appealing
to the good sense of the people
in Washington to do something
about it,” stated M cIntyre.
He said many pictures of the
road conditions would be sent to
W ashington to support an
appeal for a higher allocation of
fuel.
M cIntyre said if the “ energy
czar” doesn't help, he didn't
know what the county could do
to remedy the situation
Concerning compensation for
use of private vehicles for
county business, M cIntyre said
he would gladly accept 16 cents
per mile for d riving his own car
rather than receive the present
$200 per month, if overtime
were paid for after-hours ac
tivities
According to M cIntyre, flat
rates were recommended by
the county E n erg y P o lic y
