But with all these planning studies being made, the one which seems to be the most important is the one which has had the least amount of publicity or public input. This is the interim land use study proposed by C olum bia R egion A ssociation of Governments (CRAG). The proposed plan will be before the general assem bly of this group which includes representatives of both the City of Sandy and Clackamas County for possible adoption. This meeting is set for Jan. 31, 8 p.m. at the Quay in Vancouver, Wash. The im pact of this plan will be great and we feel the people of this area need a chance to review the plan before it goes into effect. There are at least two meetings on this CRAG plan set in early February in Sandy, but by then it will be too late. CRAG officials state the plan will be for only about two years (1976) or until a m ore comprehensive plan is completed by the agency. This past legislature gave board planning powers to this agency and it appears CRAG is going to use this power. But before it adopts this interim plan, we hope CRAG will take its proposal to the people. N e w S treet N am es? The new county numbering system in the Boring area is creating some confusion and bad feelings over the changing of street nam es and ad dresses. The Sandy area is expected to be next in line for this new numbering system which will be done countywide to help identify exact locations and to give all properties an exact address. One draw back, as the residents of Boring fioand out, is the system calls for the non-duplication of street names. So m any of the street names now fam iliar to us in the Sandy area could be in for a change if someplace else in the county has priority on a street name. In light of this, Sandy U.S. Post m aster John Metsger has .come up with a good idea: Why not form a com m ittee to come up with a list of possible street nam es to be used in case any local streets must have a name change. M etsger suggests the list of nam es should be based around the Pioneer or Centennial image of the City of Sandy. This would fit in well with the Sandy Area Chamber of Commerce’s p.an to promote a Pioneer or rustic design theme for the city this year. Such street names as Pioneer Way, Barlow Trail Street or Wagon Wheel Street would be very fitting for Sandy. We would go a step further and suggest a three-person committee made up of Metsger, a representative of the Sandy cham ber and the city council should be formed to begin making this list. The citizens of the area could becom e involved by su b m ittin g nam es to this committee. T he fig u re accounts fo r spending by students, staff and the college during the past year. More than 10,000 students now attend M t. Hood and the college employs 450 full-time people and about the same number of part-tifloe. Construction was not a factor in d eterm in in g the dollars returned to the area. Students accounted fo r nearly $6 million in spending last year for everything from food and housing to clothing and automobiles. Since Mt. Hood is a community college it does not provide housing. Students either continue to live at home or rent an apartment within the campus vicinity. M an y students also own homes in this area as the average age of an MHCC student is around 24 and many are married and work in the community also. Over 60 per cent of Mt. Hood’s students have full or part-time jobs. College staff expenditures were figured excluding housing items and the total came to N early every ski area in the Pacific Northwest reported the biggest crowds of the winter Sunday as cold temperatures, new snow and mostly clear skies meshed to provide ex cellent skiing conditions. It was the first weekend, since onset of the gasoline shortage, that weather con ditions and holiday conflicts have not been a factor in keeping crowds down. Thus, it provided a test, without complicating factors, of the effect on skiing participation. The effect was apparently little, according to ski area managers; although they did report more skiers arriving per car and m ore ski buses carrying groups Heights Road at the intersection with Tupper Road. City work crews have been out to work on the problem. (Post Photo) Good news travels fast. Everyone is talking about our high interest savings accounts. Gome in and open yours today. To the Editor: This is a copy of a letter I sent to President Richard Nixon: It is my recollection that the Constitution provided specific powers fo r the federal governm ent and quite positively reserved all other powers to the states or the people. Can you tell me, and your other fellow Americans, just when and where did anything in the Constitution give the fed eral governm ent any authority to decree the speed lim it at which trucks may be driven (or any other vehicles) on the roads of any state or even the streets of Sandy, Oregon? Or has M r Nixon allowed some parts of the Constitution to be erased along with some parts of his tapes. Sincerely G. P Meligan 12811SE Bobby Bruce Lane Boring, Ore.
