12 - SANDY (Or«.) POST Thurs., Jan. 17, 1974 Animals key to local illustrator's latest book By NANCY BARKER SUH Writer “ I never drew a person until I went to art school," confessed illu s tra to r G loria Gaulke Swanton, ‘‘just animals!” But animals are the most important part of her latest book. "N o Accounting fo r T a ste s" w ritte n by Aileen F isher W himsical skunks, sloths, and pandas peer out fro m its pages to charm prim ary grade readers A nim als have always charmed Mrs Swanton. “ I ’ve always loved anim als," moss actually grows in *their enthused the free-lance artist, hair?" who shares her M armot home And Mrs. Swanton's sloths with husband Tom. daughter actually have some moss in Tah nee plus three dogs and one their hair Realistic details like cat Several horses also reside this lend authenticity to her in a barn on the spacious lot. illu s tra tio n s She keeps a Although she has been research file , inclu ding around animals most of her photographs of animals, and life, Mrs. Swanton researches magazine pictures. the animals she uses in her “ My file is the only thing that illustrations didn't get burned in the fire ," " I did a lot of research on this Mrs Swanton recalled The book," she related " I get so fire, a year ago November, invo lved in reading about destroyed everything else in animals. Did you know that their Wemme trailer. sloths stay in the same trees all "We lite ra lly had to start all their life and are so slow that over again.” The fire has made many changes in the Swanton's lives, but some of them are for the better They are enjoying their new Pan-abode home, which they built themselves in the Marmot valley “ It's just like giant Lincoln Logs,” smiled Mrs Swanton, who has used her artistic eye to decorate the log interior with orange shag carpeting and yellow vinyl chairs. “ And the best p a rt," she continued, “ is my studio." “ Now that I have a studio in the house. I ’ll be able to get a lot more jobs." Mrs. Swanton had taken time off from her promising free lance career to turn her talents to hom em aking when she married husband, Tom, almost seven years ago. Now that daughter, Tahnee is in kin dergarten, she would like to resume her career. “ I have done 11 books all together,” she calculated, “ and all except two of them were done in a three year period.” That three year period was when the then Gloria Gaulke was free-lancing in New York City, after her graduation from the Chouinard A rt Institute in Los Angeles. “ At that time, in 1962, there were no publishing houses on the West Coast," related Mrs. Swanton. “ I did my new book fo r a company in Glendale, Bowmar Publishing, but back then, they were all back east,” she added. Free-lancing in New York meant taking a portfolio of work door to door, “ like a salesman", and waiting to be called. “ They put your name on file, and then you had to w ait,” rem em bered M rs. Swanton. "But I got my foot in the door rig ht off the b a t!” This amazing feat was ac complished with a book, “ A Day w ith My Pets,” which she had done while s till in school. The many animal illustrations 1« « « n l n l it lu t iia iu iu aa«a w Swanton began showing them. “ I had always had horses, but had never shown before,” she explained. " A frie n d , Bud Weicks, got me started “ My firs t time in the ring, I won second place in the halter class," recalled Mrs. Swanton “ Then I just had to keep it up.” Her hobby has led to still another in te re s t, doing illu s tra tio n s of horses fo r owners who show them. “ I ’d like to get into more animal illustration, in between books,” Mrs. Swanton said. But now that she has gotten her foot "Back in the door," in book illustrating, she may not have any “ in between" to spare. Publishers may find her philosophy about c h ild re n ’s books contagious. "T h e p ic tu re s are more important than the story,” believes G lo ria Gaulke Swanton. "That book has gotten me several jobs,” Mrs. Swanton remarked After living in New York more than three years, the budding young illu s tra to r decided to return to the Sandy- Hoodland area, where she had grown up, and where her mother, Mrs Beulah Gaulke lives. " I had my fill of cities,” she commented. “ 1 missed the outdoors—things lik e horse back riding and skiing." It was while doing the latter that she met her husband-to-be. He had traveled from Boston to Mt Hood to ski. “ I t ’s funny, we were both back east, and we had to come all the way out here to meet,” she laughed. U ntil the fire, the Swantons had lived in Wemme, where they had horses. It was while they were in Wemme that Mrs. NEW BOOK by Alleen Fisher which will be used in many schools, has cover and illustratons by Gloria Gaulke known locally as Gloria Swanton. , (Post Photo) w vv point w ith publishers.
