ABOUT
THE
SYLVAN HORTUS
TREE
A common small tree of the
Northwest is the Cascara tree.
Rhamnus Purshiana, as it is
known b otanically,
is a
m em ber of the Buckthorn
family It is a small tree that
will grow to about 40 feet in our
western valleys. Farther south
in a hotter, drier climate, it is
plentiful as a shrub It must be
that this tree likes a cool, moist
climate.
Many of you may have at one
time in your life gathered the
bark of this tree to sell to the
drug trade. It is the source of
the Cascara used as a physic
and a tonic in medicine. Many
bark peelers also peeled tne
stump clear to the ground, and
the tree died. If any bark is left
on the stump of a Cascara, the
tree will sprout and grow again.
This regrowth is rapid as the
new shoots have a fully grown
root system le ft in tact to
support them. It has been
estimated that as much as a
half million pounds of bark a
year are harvested in Oregon
and Washington These two
states furnish the w orld's
supply of natural Cascara.
Some is made synthetically,
but the demand for the natural
bark is still heavy.
The tree is slender with a few
branches when grown in forest
conditions where it must
compete for sunlight space. In
NOW
the open with slight com
petition for a place in the sun,
the tree is apt to develop large
ascending branches and be a
wide almost globular form..
The leaves, although an oval

shape much like several other
trees produce, are distinctive in
their evenly spaced, absolutely
p a ra lle l protruding veins.
Except for the heavy veins, the
leaves are thin in texture. The
wood of the tree is noticeably
yellow in color. It is quite brash
and grainy with no commercial
value.
The fruits are much like
cherries in appearance When
fully ripe, they are a dark blue,
almost black. Birds are fond of
them. Just before leaving in the
fall, large flocks of Cedar
Waxwings can be found in
Cascara inickeis. T n e B a n d
Tailed Pigeons that migrate
through Oregon every Sep
tember also have a fondness for
those berries. After they have
fed on the berries for a few
days, these pigeons are no
longer much of an epicurian
treat. They tend to taste like the
inside of a medicine cabinet.
The birds do not digest the
seeds, but they do help the
distribution. As the fruiting
habits of the trees are boun
tifu l, plenty of seeds get
scattered around. In our damp
climate many take root and
grow. In spite of the bark
peeling for the last century, we
still have plenty of Cascara.
How much should you tip
those who pack and move your
furniture? Nothing. The in-
te rs ta te Com m erce Com
mission says it is unlawful, in
moves across state lines, to tip
any moving company employe
or representative. It is also
unlawful for them to solicit or
accept a tip. If a moving
company employe suggests you
pay a tip, report the m atter to
