Job Corps helps young workers
Oregon highways become safer
It was safer to drive in
Oregon last year than in any
year since 1964.
The Oregon Motor Vehicles
D ivision reported that the
tentative toll for the year is 634
That is 103 fewer deaths than
were recorded in 1972 when all-
time high (737) was recorded in
the state.
“We've shown that reduc
tions in traffic deaths can be
achieved despite ever in
creasing vehicles on the high
way,” Governor Tom McCall
said Tuesday
“ Last year’s reduction,” he
said, “can be attributed to
several factors, including in
creased tra ffic enforcement
made possible by added police
m anpower and special en
forcem ent efforts against
drinking drivers."
Lower speeds put in effect on
the state's roads in mid-
November also were given
credit by the Governor for
reducing deaths during the last
two months of the year by 31
per cent.
“ Most O regonians,” the
Governor said, ‘have abided
by the lower speeds and that
means that those who are not
are posing a hazard to other
motorists and are also using
more than their fair share of
available gasoline."
D M V said only two months
last year, March and April,
recorded higher death tolls
than in 1972.
Last year's toll includes 96
pedestrians, 12 bicyclists, and
31 m otorcyclists. A ll three
figures are lower than in 1972.
The remaining 495 victims died
as occupants of motor vehicles.
Preliminary records indicate
that 22 counties in the state
recorded fewer traffic deaths
last year than in 1972. Four
county tolls were unchanged.

The toll is subject to revision

later die as a result of those
injuries, the division added.
