JACK RAE (VERN A) has returned home after two weeks at Providence hospital in Portland, where she had major surgery We are happy to report that Verna is up and around and is now receiving visitors. ooo GEORGE AND JOYCE BISTORIOUS, two long time residents of the Mountain, moved to Florida and will make their home there. They have lived up here since 1911. They originally lived in the old Tawney hotel at Welches They owned and operated the Brightwood Tavern for over 10 years George worked with the U S. Forest Service for many years and in recent years has drove to Portland and back each day to his employment with the school dept. They expect to settle somewhere in the Naples or Tampa area. ooo FUN THING THIS W EEK was the Christmas party given by Vi Collier at the Mt. Hood Womens Club for her ceramic group, ooo THE IN N B ETW E EN AT Wemme has changed hands The new owners are George Alfsen and Anne Crockatt They will have their cocktail license on Dec. 26, present plans include opening their new dance floor and the pool room area. ooo A V E R Y SERIOUS MISHAP that had a happy ending was the four wheel drive trip taken by the Dennie Fitzwater family of Wildwood. Dennie and Joanne, along with daughter Tina and their guest Ted Wright, Brightwood, took the trip. They were testing their vehicle for off road driving and decided to drive across and through Still Creek. They were making good progress when they were caught and stuck in the middle by high water. Dennie climbed out the window into the raging stream and Joanne handed Tina out the window and Dennie took her ashore, he then returned for Joanne. In the meantime, Ted the more adventurous i one of the group, had climbed out the window and onto the roof, where he calmly removed his clothing down to his shorts. He rolled them neatly and threw them to shore. He then plunged into the icy stream and made his way to the bank, dressed in his dry clothing, none (he worse except cold. Hood Chapter of the Northwest Steelheaders, under the direction of Russ Konell, president. The Mt. Hood group is engaged in a project to raise steelhead smolt on our upper streams and to eventually establish a summer run. The M t Hood Club has ordered 100 of these for their pilot program. Sixes Creek on the Salmon River in the Wildwood area was checked for spawning gravel, water flow and temperature Sun day. No decision will be made as to where to locate the hatching boxes until all the locations have been checked out. Anyone wishing to help with this project may do so by joining the club. All bright and shiny. Dewey Monahan with a bright 7 lb fish. Del Stevens had the largest 22 lbs and 41 inches long. ooo MT HOOD D ISTR IC T F IR E D E P A R T M E N T was called to Bowman’s on Sunday afternoon. F ire Chief Ed Cooke responded with two fire trucks and 17 officers and men. The fire was con tained to the ceiling and attic Most of the damage was from water from the automatic sprinkler system. Heat built up in a broiler was suspected as the cause — but business as usual. Three engines responded. ooo CHECKED W ITH THE BRIGHTWOOD weigh stations regarding private citizens hauling wood in pickups with passenger plates You are allowed 6,000 lbs. with the driver. ooo BLACK ICE WAS RESPONSIBLE for two wrecks on the upper mountain Tuesday night. A Jefferson Plywood chip truck and trailer overturned on Hwy 26 1 mile west of Government Camp and the truck went through the road guard and over the bank. The driver was not injured. In the other accident, a 69 Dodge spun out of control on Hwy 26 about 5 miles west of Government Camp and had extensive damage. Lucky no injuriesi in this one either ooo W ILL SAY Chow for now.
