Ski areas draw crowds; work on shortages Eastmont TV L o c a t io n : car takes on appearance of power boat on Orient Drive near intersection with Mt slim snowfalls of last winter. Ski area managers were among the first to find means of cutting power consumption to help get the Pacific North west "over the hump” in the current energy crisis. But the problems change nearly daily. Now, it’s the gasoline situation and the ski area people are working just as hard to solve this one. The ski area operators are assisting to organize car pools, setting up ride-sharing stations and working out bus transportation in addition to reducing their own use of gasoline and oil. TIMBERLINE LODGE Timberline Lodge is now an official U S. Historic Site, according to a recent decision of the U S. Department of In terior The action means that go to church and still get a full day's skiing", said area manager Jack Baldwin. Snow tractor charters are available to Tilly Jane camp at the timberline level. MULTORPOR - SKI BOWL “More snow than ever before at this time of the year and the best pre-December business on record ”, is how Multorpor Ski Bowl President Carl Reynolds describes the action so far this season at the Mt. Hood resort. “By closing Mondays and not opening until noon on Tuesdays, we’re saving elec tricity to make the rest of the operation possible this season”, Reynolds added. More than six feet of snow is on the ground at the base of the area, more than two feet above last winter’s maximum Hunting accidents no accident The Game Com m ission’s nunter education otticer receives a report detailing each hunting firearms accident that occurs in Oregon. Each report is a record of a personal tragedy; a few relate the m istakes which ended in someone's death. It's frustrating for anyone involved in a hunter safety program to receive reports like these because in nearly all cases the accidents could have been prevented if the shooter had observed the most rudimentary precautions. It seems almost as if some hunters purposely tempt fate when they handle a gun At least it’s hard to come up with any other explanation. Take, for example, an ac cident which happened during deer season. In this instance, as in 14 other firearms accidents that were reported last month, the victim shot himself. The hunter, who fortunately sur vived his mistake, was after deer in an orchard area and stopped beneath a pear tree. He attempted to knock a pear off the tree by swinging the butt of his loaded rifle while holding onto the barrel The safety catch was off and the rifle fired when a twig caught the trigger. The victim was shot through the upper body and is lucky to be alive. At least two hunters learned a painful lesson this season in separate incidents and P IO N IE R CAFE a n d TA V E R N N ow O pen U nd er New M anagem ent W e a re in th e process of rem o d elin g to bring th e best in M exican food. COOPERSPUR Cooper Spur's ski school, directed by Ken Raasch with a staff of 20 drew its earliest start, ever, last weekend when the area's T-bar started with 40 inches of snow on the hill, capped by four or five inches of new snow. Saturday hours are from 9 a m. to 9:30 p.m. with Sunday skiing started at 10 a m and continuing until 6 p.m. on a day ticket. “Later Sunday hours give people a chance to W L Brightwood Garage 34 10 25 19 Charlie’s Place 23 Vi 20 Vi Bert’s Bty Salon 23 Vi 20>i Hoodland AG Mkt 23 21 Bowman’s 23 21 ZigZag Inn 21 23 Gios Ford 21 23 Mary Jo Shp 18 Vi 25 Vi Log Lodge 18 26 Hoodland TV 17 Vi 26 Vi Cat’s Meow 16 28 Carlson’s Chev High individual game and series: Ruby Langlois 233, Marge Jarvis 587. One victim lost several toes; the other suffered major bone damage.. C ertainly, common sense should have warned these three hunters they were running a stupid and unnecessary risk. Two fatal accidents this season involved hunters who mistook other hunters for game, a deer in one case and an elk in the other. Since people don’t look at all like deer and even less like elk, these are simple cases of too much haste by hunters not sure of their targets It’s saddening to receive reports like these because every one of these accidents was easily preventable. What can you do to minimize the possibility that you might ever become involved in a shooting accident? First, you can be aware that a large percentage of casualties involve hunters who shoot them selves when f ir e a r m s a c c id e n ta lly discharge. N ext, you can tactfully remind your shooting partners if you see them doing something with a gun which endangers you or themselves, and find other companions if they don’t take the hint. Further, you can think defensively when you handle a gun Just as defensive drivers look for and avoid potential accidents, so can we avoid firearms accidents by thinking about what could happen. Finally, we can handle every firearm as if it might unex pectedly go off, and keep it pointed where no one could be injured if it did.
