Sandy winter sport teams
workout; appear strong
Pioneers dominate
all-division teams
As reported last week, the
Sandy Pioneers were well
represented on the all division
teams for the Coast Valley
League
Two Sandy players made
both the 1st team offensive and
defensive units They were Tim
Keller at center on offense and
guard on defense and Dan
Turin was named the quar
terback on offense and half
back on defense
The coaches in each division
voted on these all-star units
with coaches not able to vote
for players on their own teams,
according to Sandy coach
Forest Allen
Another Sandy player, Keith
Jensen, was chosen to both the
2nd team offensive and
defensive units. He was named
as a flanker on offense and a
safety on defense.
Other first unit all-division
players from Sandy were Steve
Aubin offensive tackle; Geoff
Richards offensive guard; Bill
Gregus offensive halfback;
Gary Blount defensive end;
Eric Lundeen defensive tackle;
and Mike Wecker defensive
linebacker
The Pioneers ended the
season with a 7-2 overall record
and a 5-1 league mark to earn
the Valley Division title.
Of all the stars selected
Richards and Gregus were the
only juniors on the offensive 1st
unit, all other players named
were seniors.

Practice for the varsity team
is held from 3:30 to 5:30 at the
Sandy pool located at Sandy
Grade School. Any other high
school students wishing to
turn out for the swim team
should contact coach von Tagen
at the pool.

Frosh sell
basketball
tickets
The Sandy High freshman
class is selling season tickets to
the high school varsity
basketball season
The frosh class is offering
the tickets at a reduced rate
during this pre-season sale.
The class members will be
selling the tickets Friday night
when the Sandy High faculty
take on the Estacada High
School faculty in a benefit
game.
The game will begin at 8 p.m
at Sandy.

Runners end CC season
The Sandy High cross
country runners finished a
disappointing 8th place in
district on Oct. 27 to end the
season.
"I felt we should have done
better,” said coach Ed Hug,
‘‘but several of our runners
came down with colds just
before this meet.”
Entered in the district event
with the Pioneers were 13 other
schools and a total of about 100
runners on the varsity level.
The event was held at Blue
Lake Park.

Bata scored the first TD for
Sandy, and the second TD came
on a Jensen to Turin pass
Bata ran in the extra point on
the second score.
The Pioneers also had TD
runs by Keller and Turin called
back during the game.
Two of the big plays for
Sandy were a 37 yard pass from
Turin to Kevin Gemhart and a
nine yard pass from Paluck to
Dennis Coy.

The winter sport teams are
now in full gear at Sandy High
School The school will compete
in swimming, basketball and
wrestling this winter.
This is the first year for the
water sport to be held in the
winter months, before it was
held in the fall
Coaching the swimmers this
year is Karl von Tagen. He
came to the Sandy program
after serving as assistant coach
at David Douglas and will be
replacing Jim Anstine who
handled the Sandy swimmers
the past few years
“The boys could be one of the
top ten teams in the state this
year,” said von Tagen, “while
the girls will have a strong
team, but also a very young
team .”
