12 - SANDY (Ore.) POST Thur»., No». 15, 1973 (Sec 1) Stage band concert slated at Mt. Hood A d o p te d son fin d s p a re n ts After accidently discovering he was an adopted child in 19+4, James D Hutchison, formerly of Gresham, ended a 29 year search, this summer, to find out the identity of his real parents The search ended when an aunt learned of his w hereabouts. She contacted him in Ridgefield, Wash . where he makes his home and then told his mother of his search Since then he has visited with his mother, father and several members of their families many times The search began in 1944 when Hutchison enlisted in the Navy after his graduation from Sandy High School While in the South Pacific he learned that he was adopted. Suddenly questions came to his mind—Who am I? Why wasn't I told before0 Who are my real parents0 Why did they put me up for adoption0 While still in the Navy, Hutchison requested the Naval legal officer to investigate his birth for him It was discovered that he was born out of wedlock in 1926 in a small Oklahoma town to a young woman and another man already married with a family. Consequently, his father lost his wife, family and job over the affair His parents went their separate ways His father remarried and his mother married and raised her own family. Still looking for his parents. Hutchison was married at the Gresham Assembly of God Church in 1947, and had a partner to aid in his search. Until this summer he only had one set of parents, now all at once he has a mother, a step m other and an aunt. His adopted mother died in 1964 He has found his real father, and has an adopted father who is 72. He now has five sisters and two brothers and is looking forward to visiting them at their homes in Texas and Oklahoma He feels anyone with adopted children should tell them at an early age that they were adopted C a m e r a s m issing Two cameras, two radios and a calculator were among items reported stolen from the Harry Elias Bates residence, Rt. 4 Box 1155, Boring, early Friday morning, according to sheriff's reports. The two-year-old German Shorthair comes from Halibut Pieces Cooked m our Special Batter Bird dog learns craft from patient trainer Getting that bird in the hand is part of Tom Burke’s job Burke trains bird dogs and has been doing so professionally in the Boring area for seven years. He shoots so many birds in the training process that he often takes a camera along instead of a gun when he goes hunting himself “I really don’t care if I shoot a bird or not," Burke explained Friday. “I’d just as soon take some pictures and get some good dog work in.” Burke runs G reenacres Kennels. He has trained his own dogs for 25 years and began training professionally when he moved to Boring from the Midwest seven years ago. Training a dog well takes a lot of birds Burke estimates that he goes through 3,000 a year “A puppy might kill 50 birds before you’ve actually trained him," Burke said. “After that you only shoot the birds he actually points He soon learns I that if he doesn't point the bird, he doesn't get to retrieve it— and retrieving is the dogs reward." Birds don’t come cheap Pigeons, which are used in the early stages of training a puppy, cost 80 cents apiece. As the dog advances, chukars (at $2.25 apiece) and pheasants ($3.50 each) are used. Burke trains around 40 dogs a year and now, understandably, is his slack season. Most hunters have their dogs out hunting. A pigeon is the only non-game bird that a dog will point by scent. Burke said. To keep the pigeon in place, the trainer "dizzy’s 'em” by whirling them around upside down a couple of times. Burke then puts the pigeon's head under its wing and hides the bird out of sight in the brush The bird will stay there about 15 minutes before flying, plenty of time for the dog to hunt it out and point it. The same method is used for pheasants “With a chuckar you just drop it anyplace where there’s good cover and it will stay put, Burke said Training dogs doesn't occupy all of his time Burke works at an automotive shop in Portland six hours a day. “From the first of March to Oct 15 is my busiest time,” he said, patting his own German Shorthair, Little Joe. On a typical day in the summertime, Burke leaves his house at daybreak, works dogs until 8 a m., then leaves for work He's back home at 2:30 p.m. and trains until dark Most of his training is done on Sauvie’s Island. At the moment Burke is training seven dogs. He has had dogs sent to him from California and Montana, “And I get a lot of dogs from the Seattle area.” A good deal of B urke’s training business probably comes from his reputation in competition. Since 1958 he has had 375 placements by his dogs in trials. A typical field trial may have 150 dogs competing and judges place only the top four, making Burke’s record over the past 25 years all the more remarkable. Furthermore, only the first place dog in a competition earns a point toward becoming a Field Champion. Little Joe. Burke's two-year- old German Shorthair. has four points to his credit. He needs six more to earn the Field Champion title. Little Joe also has six points in bench competition, which is based solely on the dog’s '-V ' configuration and gait, and Burke thinks the dog has a good chance of becoming a dual champion. More than anything else, Burke enjoys training dogs and helping other people train theirs. He readily admitted that taking your dog to a professional train e r isn’t always the best way to go. “There’s a lot of satisfaction in training your own dog," he said. “Patience is the key. A guy goes hunting with a buddy who has an experienced dog and figures his pup should know everything the first time out.” “Don’t rush the dog. More good bird dogs have been ruined that way.” It takes Burke about two or three months to train a dog The dog never forgets the training. On the other hand, a good dog is always learning. "Chukars are the most dif ficult bird for a dog to learn because they run so bad It takes a dog two years to become a good chukar dog, and some never learn.” Burke said he might train 20 pups before he runs across a dog that’s a potential field champion.
