The Pioneers were com peting in their firs t year of high school water polo and finished second to David Douglas in the state tournam ent held at Portland State University Nov. 2-3 The a ll-s ta te players fo r Sandy were Ron Hewitt and Steve Roth, both seniors, and B ill Anderson a sophomore. Hewitt and Roth were chosen as forwards, while Anderson was named as the best short end goalie in the state. Coach Karl von Tagen stated all three players played im portant parts in the great season had by the Sandy team. “ A ll three really came on in the state tournament,” said von Tagen, “ this helped us take the second place trophy.” For the season, Hewitt and Roth were the top offensive players fo r Sandy, scoring three fourths of the goals made by the Pioneers. Meanwhile, Anderson played tough defense from the goalie position “ Hewitt and Roth are both strong sw im m ers and th is helped their play, while An derson made use of his height and long arms in defending our goal,” said von Tagen Hewitt and Roth were the key scorers for Sandy as the team used plays during the season which featured the two seniors working in front of the op ponents goal. Both Hewitt and Roth are now on the varsity swimming team which began practice this week, w hile Anderson w ill move to the JV basketball court for the winter months. w llA T ch R IS T IA N THESE THREE swimmers were key people in Sandy High's second place finish in the state water polo tournament. Hood had skiers on the siopes over the weekend, but warmer weather and rainfall reportedly washed away as much as two feet of snow at some lodges. Skiing is expected to be open at several locations this weekend, with new flurries and cooler weather ex pected to add inches to the snow pack. Forest Service's third annual National Avalanche School this week in Seattle. Several local ski people a t tended this school. Purpose of the school is to develop an increased awareness of snow avalanches and their possible hazards to those who work, play or travel in mountainous areas, said Regional Forester Theodore A. Schlapfer, U.S. Forest Service. A v a la n c h e c o n tr o l, avalanche hazard reduction and forecasting, and avalanche rescue operations w ill be among the subjects covered. Meanwhile the varsity team had a record of 5-5 and the JV team ended the season with a 4- 6 record. The teams were honored last week during the fa ll sports dessert held at the high school. W ith ,4?|| <• The ski areas on Mt Hood are Timberline, Mt Hood Mv. .jw s, Multorpor-Ski Bowl and Cooper Spur Plus there are w in te r recreational areas at Govern ment Camp and Snow Bunny Lodge Tim berline Lodge reported the most snow with over 50 inches w h ile M t. Hood Meadows had over 40 inches. A ll ski areas had snow cats out packing down the slopes and this w ill help create a good base for the rest of the year Other ski areas in Oregon and the N orth w e st also began operating this past weekend Several areas reported lim ited operations of ski lifts, but fu ll operation is expected at all areas by Thanksgiving D rivers are warned to carry tire chains in the mountain areas and be prepared to en counter snow
