The class w ill then work out a management system for the live acre plot which w ill bring the tree crop through two Christmas tree harvests, a pre- commercial thinning, one or two commercial thinnings, and a final harvest. Some ex periments are planned (or tree grow th ra te a lteratio ns. Examples could include the use of fe rtiliz e rs , selected tree strains, site preparation, and undesirable plant grow th control. The pictures that go along with this article show the students falling trees at the forestry lab, practicing both chainsaw fa llin g and axe falling. Students have also been involved with clearing under story growth and surveying Also, as part of the class project, a management plan w ill be drawn up for the entry forestry lab The amount of tim ber management, such as the number of new trees to be replanted and the species, w ill be of prime consideration. Resource Assistant for the Estacada D istrict, Ron Koenig reported “ Although this is the first time the bathhouse has been burned, other forms of vandalism have affected the building Carving on walls and painting the split cedar shakes is very common We also lose a major portion of the shakes each year — they are lorn off for firewood.” Koenig indicated a con tinuing struggle to keep the facilities at Bagby maintained With present budget restric tions, i t ’s questionable if the building w ill be repaired. The bathhouse, built in the 1930‘s by the Forest Service, has provided enjoyment for many people who hike the mile tra il to soak in the hot, mineral water In 1973 over 10,500 people used the site. Now, we are learning about the texture of many things. We w ill try to use descriptive words to tell about how things feel. Our Art and Music centers around Thanksgiving. We w ill also learn poems and think about things that we are thank ful for. Tami Boyles, Becky Clift, Danny Chinn, Davi Hankel, John Thomas, and Ron Snell have given illustrated book reports to encourage others to read good books on our “ I love Books'' bulletin board. In science, we have been studying about a ir and the water-cycle. As an experiment, ■ we tried to make it rain in our classroom ! Several young dancers tried a rain d an ce- just to ensure success, of course, and with great results.
