T H E W A TER CHANGES
Just a few weeks ago I
rem arked on the effect of the
low water in the streams ac
companied with some warm
weather This produced mid
su m m er conditions in late
spring as far as the fishing was
concerned Now the water has
changed
A week of off and on cold
rains coupled with cool days
and cold nights has reversed
this condition There is more
water in the streams and it is
colder water The cool days
have dampened the ability of
the sun to warm the water In
our mountain rivers right now,
early spring conditions prevail
in early summer
You were fishing the surface
d uring the e a r lie r w a rm e r
weather Now you go back to
tro u t
opening
conditions
Nymphs and wet flies are in
order If you fish bait, roll it
along the bottom The fish are
not high enough in the water for
the m id w a te r d rift to be
productive
Too, the fishes
metabolism is reduced by the
colder water, so they are not so
ready to take just anything
They are apt to be picky
I once hit a situation like this
while on vacation The tem
peratures at night approached
freezing Days were alternately
sunny and cloudy with a shower
thrown in here and there Cold
rain was in those showers
When the sun was on the water,
it looked like a perfect dry fly
day, not a sign of a hatch, nor a
dimple from a feeding fish
After a full day of trying just
about everything in my fly box,
I was pretty well discouraged I
still do not know what promp
ted me to it, but the next
morning I tried a large buck
caddis tied on a heavy 4X stout
steelhead fly hook At first, it
too yielded nothing, but I
couldn't think of anything else
to change to, so I started ex
perimenting with the retrieve.
As a rule. Rainbow trout like
a retrieve with some action in
it, but this day no variation in
action would entice a strike
Even Ray Bergm ans hand
twist retrieve failed So I idled
the fly. just letting it hang in the
current If I let it hang there too
long, the heavy fly would
finally settle to the bottom
When 1 felt this happen I

slowly picked up a foot of line
and let it hang there again
Bang, a fish took it while it was
stationary but slowly settling
This was the way to go this day,
I thought It was the first strike
in over a day of hard fishing
And so it was This method
worked so well I was into
several fish an hour I was in
the catch and release business,
so I changed the fly to a dun
colored fly on an equally heavy
hook It worked just as well.
Pattern made no difference
The fly had to be large and
bushy and not moving
It made sense after thinking
the days events over The
colder water had made the fish
lethargic They weren't going
to move very far for food, it
didn't interest them that much
They were laying on the bottom
sheltered from the current as
much as possible But. if a
large enough morsel hesitated
near them long enough, they
were willing to spend enough
energy to take it
In the years since that first
experiment, I have met these
same conditions several times,
and this seems to be the best
way to go after trout whose
normal seasonal habits have
been interupted by unseasonal
cold water
