School Budgets Need Support
It's school budget election time
again in the Sandy area Both Sandy
High School and Sandy Grade School
district w ill be seeking 1973-1947
budgets on Tuesday, June 26
This is the second try for both
districts. The high school lost its first
budget election 566 No to 503 Yes,
while the grade school budget was
defeated 361 No to 285 Yes
These first elections were held back
on May 7 following the defeat of the
McCall Tax Plan on May 1. We
suspect confusion over the McCall
Plan was one of the major reasons
leading to the defeat of the two local
INSURANCE
school budgets.
Both school d is tric ts are re
submitting to the voters budgets
asking for the same amount as was
defeated, although a small amount of
funds have been transferred in both
budgets to meet new expected costs.
Approval of these budgets are
needed regardless of any future
action the current legislature might
do to help relieve the school property
tax burden.
Our schools need money to continue
to improve and provide our children
with a good education.
Whether you support the budgets or
not, remember to vote on Tuesday.

Fire Budget Backed by N ew Harmony
There has been much controversy
in recent months concerning internal
friction in the Sandy Rural Fire
District. The friction has resulted in
the resigning of several longtime
volunteers over conflicts with the fire
board and the fire chief. Bob Rathke.
Much of the blame for prolonging
the situation can be given to the board
which at first failed to back the chief
or agree with the demands of those
who cesxeced.
_____
: several raonws and after
the internal problems have boiled out
into the community, the board has
taken the stand to back the chief and
the m ajority of the volunteer force,
which has backed the chief all along.
The board’s position was evident at
the recent public hearing on the
proposed 1973-1974 budget.
The board gave full support to the
budget as developed first by Chief
Rathke and then revised by the
budget committee.
The budget is up slightly from the
current year’s budget (see story on
page 1). It is a budget both Chief
Rathke and the board believe w ill
improve the fire protection in the
district when combined with the new
harmony and already approved bond
issue.
w The Sandy district is one of the
largest in the state and also it has one
of the fastest growing populations
The
proposed
budget
has
been developed with this in mind and
it will be up to the voters to decide on
June 26 whether to support it or not.
Remember to vote on the budget at
the Sandy fire hall The poll w ill be
open from 8 a m. to 8 p.m.
Lohman Wins This Round
The review of the Clackamas
County Planning Department has
taken another chapter this week: the
battle between chairman Robert Loh
man and a group of citizens (See
story page 1.)
Lohman has been a strong-handed
chairman and continuously follows
statements by committee members
and those testifying with “ that’s
good” , “ great” and “ that’s righ t” . He
also has the habit of always trying to
rephrase the statements made by
everyone.
The citizens Tuesday night
protested this type of chairmanship
and also the procedures the com
mittee has been using in its review.
Lohman won this round by steering
a quick vote of confidence without
calling for discussion from the other
members of the committee. The five
other committee members present all
voted to support his chairmanship.
Following this, several members of
the audience in protest walked out of
the meeting stating their intentions of
withdrawing their cases from the
committee.
If this is true, then the review of the
planning commission w ill be in
complete.
It is time for the county com
missioners to take a good look at the
charge they gave this review com
mittee six months ago and to get it
moving towards that goal or replace
it.
Employment edges up
E m p lo y m e n t in C lackam as County
continued to edge up in May Insured
unemployment experienced a substantial
decline Job opportunity improved in se
lected occupations Building perm it data
for the county revealed a drop in single
fam ily applications, according to the staff
of Oregon Employment Division.
Manufacturing employment exhibited
an upward trend Expanding industries
including lumbering, fabricated metals,
e le c tric a l eq uip m en t, transp o rtatio n
equipment, textiles, and paper added
some 75 workers. Small loeses were
recorded in the food, furniture, and other
durables industries
Building perm it values for Clackamas
County experienced a decline of nearly SI
million in M ay to reach about SB million.
The decline was centered in the single
fam ily category which was off S2 .6 million.
Large m ulti-fam ily projects amounting to
SI .8 million and commercial and industrial
permits valued at S2 million helped
cushion the drop in May.
Agricultural employment in Clackamas
County showed an upturn at the end of May
as strawberry picking started in early
Saturday, June 2, to help with the first
picking School platoons were generally
available starting the first week of June as
schools closed Crop and m arket prospects
are quite favorable The peak of the
harvest is expected around mid-June.
The insured jobless rolls experienced a
rather sharp drop in M ay There were only
«38 claims for unemployment benefits for
a week near the end of the month The
insured jobless rates for Clackamas
County are shown below in comparison
with surrounding areas
Opportunity for work showed an upturn
in some occupations as indicated by orders
received in early June The professional
and technical field exhibited considerable
a c tiv ity w ith openings in d ra ftin g ,
management, and nursing. Demand for
clerical workers appeared to slack off.
Students and graduates are-in the m arket
for summer and permanent office jobs.
Sales orders picked up recently, par
ticularly for cashier-checkers, and retail
sales clerks.
Orders rose sharply for groundskeeper
and landscape laborer. The supply of
requie
of strawberry peckers.
