H. Francis M e e k e r
V e lm a Smith
H Francis Meeker, late of
Enterprise and formerly of
Sandy, passed away at an
E n te rp ris e nursing
home
Friday, April 27, at the age of
87
He was bom July 25, 1885 in
Milford, la where he spent his
early chilcftiood and youth He
received his degree in nursing
and m arried Nancy Throck
morton in 1905 To this union
was born four children
Several years of working for
the Seventh day Adventist
church was halted because of
failing health
The
fa m ily
moved
to
Colorado where they took up a
hom estead
M rs
M eeker
passed away in 1919 In 1924
Francis went to Madison, Tenn
There he met and married Ida
Mae Tetze in 1928 They worked
in nursing in Georgia until 1929
when
they
moved
to
Washington, D C
to attend
school
In 1933 the Meekers moved to
Oregon where Francis worked
in sawmills He lost an arm in
an addicent a, work In spite of
his handicap he continued to
work in a m ill for several years
in the Sandy area
Ida Mae was killed in an auto
accident in 1968

About
three years ago he,

husband, moved to Enterprise,
where he lived until his death

Crux, Calif ; and a daughter,

daughters, A u re lia K ertesz,
Jacksonville, Ore., and Eilene
Mercer, York, Penn . as well as
16 grandchildren and a number
of great grandchildren

Chester Carl Stein, 59. a
native Oregon farm er, Kt 2,
Boring, died suddenly at a
Portland Hospital on May 3 He
was bom at Damascus and
attended D am ascus G rade
School and graduated from
Gresham High School
On March 3, 1945, at Van
couver. Wash , he married
Matilda P J Green He took
his wife to the farm he and his
father had been bom on, and
had lived there and farmed
until the day of his death
His health has been failing
for several years He was a
dedicated farm man, and took a
pride in his farm produce
The surviving members of
his fam ily include his wife

son, Carl W Stein of Gresham,
and

of Boring

Funeral services of Velma
Kula Smith, 69, of Kt 2 Box 428,
Boring were held Tuesday at
the Bateman Funeral Chapel in
Gresham
Mrs Smith died at her home
in Boring after an extended
illness
She was twrn in Seymour, la ,
the daughter of K T and Ida
Beary She was raised in Iowa,
however, she spent much of her
later life in Missouri While
living in Missouri she was
employed as a nurse in the
Monorah Hospital of that city
She and her husband Albert
have resided in Boring for the
past 13 years

annual competition that started
out as the first of its kind in the
United States Festival founder

anywhere from 70-80 groups to

begin at 8 p m in Mt Hood's
gymnasium I t ’s the top high
school swing choir festival in
the Wes, and a fine evening of
entertainment for the entire

Chaplin, are featured in up
coming movies at the college
Films May 18 and 21 are:

"Charlie Chan in Shanghai.”
