Centennial Year Starts
The Sandy Centennial and Barlow
Road Days celebration in Sandy will
get into full swing this weekend.
Sunday will be the day with the
major events, but for those of you
hunting for a good place for dinner
Saturday try the AFS dinner at the
high school.
There will be several visiting ex
change students and it would be
tremendous for us to show our
"Centennial spirit" by attending the
dinner and other activities planned.
Sunday morning you can head for
the Boring 4-H breakfast at the
Boring grade school and then get
ready for the community beef dinner
and other activities at the high school.
The Post Office will also be holding
an open house Sunday afternoon and
the dedication ceremony is set for 3
p m. at the city hall.
This is just the start of the Cen
tennial year here and we look forward
to it getting off to a good start. Citizen
participation will be a key factor in
helping the Centennial year be a
success.
No Amnesty for Draft Dodgers
We couldn't let President Nixon s
stand this week on amnesty for draft
dodgers pass us up w ithout some kind
of com m ent—mostly in the a f
firmative.
Of course the Vietnam war has been
‘a miserable affair that we will w ant to
forget. There's no argument in that.
Still, we can't condone the actions of

to evade the draft made their choice
at that time; they took their chances
crossed the borders. As President
Nixon stated, they don't have to come
back now—they are welcome to stay
where they are.
If amnesty w ere granted, what kind
of reaction could we expect from
those w ho accepted the draft call into
the Armed Forces and served their
time? They didn't want to go. either
It is sad And it is ironic, too. Now
we no longer have a draft.
Group formed to fight
Sandy as 'Scenic River'

Property owners opposed to

. waterway on the Sandy River
» have informed Governor Tom
McCall of their plan to create
an
association
resisting
creation of the waterway.
Approximately 100 persons
met last Wednesday in Sandy to
form an association to protest
the waterway status proposed
by the Oregon State Highway-
department. The group was
scheduled to meet again
Wednesday. Feb 7. at 7 30 p m
in the Odd Fellows Hall. Sandy,
to adopt a name for the
association and elect officers
Instrumental in forming the
group are M r and Mrs. Glenn
Nelson, Rt. 3. Box 972. Trout
dale
The Nelsons recently-
purchased property on the
Sandy within the 12.5 mile
stretch of the river proposed for
the waterway.
"We attended both hearings
held by the state on Jan. 23 and
24, said Mrs Nelson, "We feel
the scenic water rules are very
restrictive We sent out in
vitations to all property owners
who will be affected by the
designation to meet on Jan 31
at Sandy "
A wire to Governor McCall
sent by the Nelsons this week
stated. “ Of the 107 present at
the meeting. 34 per cent were
opposed to naming 12.5 miles of
the Sandy as a scenic w ater
way .”
The Nelsons further asked
McCall to delay signing the act
until an independent study can
be made by an im p a rtia l
commission.

association has funds coming in
to organize a fight against the

been suggested.
“ We hope for wide support
from the community,” said
Mrs Nelson. “The state claims
it w ill preserve the river We
don't think they will. For in
stance, the limited access to the
river won’t include present
roads into Dodge and Oxbow
Parks The roads w ill probably
be improved drawing large
crowds from Portland."

Five new homes slated
During the month of January , the city of
Sandy approved building permits for an
estimated total of 8671.396
The largest was a 8571,000 building
permit for the new addition to the upper
grades at Sandy grade school. Work on this
project is set to begin immediately, ac
cording to Sandy grade school superin
tendent Tony Bryant
Other permits issued included five for
new homes and one for a pump station at
the high school
Joe Yoerger received a permit for a
819,000 home to be built on Cherry St.
Brinkley and Sons will build a 819.180
home on the Brinkley subdivision on Kelso
City council,
planner meet
The Sandy city council will hold its
February meeting on Monday night, 8
p m , in the city hall
At this meeting, the council will begin
work on the budget for 1973-1974
Also next week, on Wednesday, 8 p m., in
the city hall the Sandy Planning Com
mission w ill meet
The planning meeting had been slated
for last Wednesday, but it was postponed
for one week because of an annexation
bearing which concerned Sandy at the
Boundary Review Board

mits to build two new homes each
estimated at 815.708 These homes w ill be
constructed on Sandy Heights
The gas pump station at Sandy high
school is estimated in value at 818,000
Fire dispatch question
goes before board
The Sandy Rural F ire District board will
hold a meeting Tuesday, 8 p m., at the fire
hall in Sandy
On the agenda, will be discussion of the
dispatch system for the district.
Fire chief Bob Rathke has proposed the
consolidat ion of the Sandy dispatch system
with the dispatch systems of Boring and
Estacada fire districts

overtime The State law says
we shall pay overtime for any
person, other than an elected
official, who works more than
eight hours in one day or 40
hours in one week. This action
will in my opinion save the
County 85.000 in the next six
months because all overtime
for these 15 men has been
waived for a 5 pel cent increase
in salary

dental coverage for the entire

was denied and the spouse and

day and is payable to his wife
and fam ily on death for any
cause, including a suicide (I
pay 819 00 per month for my
government 810.000 G .I. in
surance ) The 110,0000 in
surance is provided in addition
to the now existing 84,000 in
surance provided for all county
employees because the existing
84,000 insurance cannot qualify
to be credited to the 810;000
insurance requiremtnt of the
State law and I am sure

the fact that our
Deputy
Sheriffs lay their life on the line
5 days a week for the people of
Clackamas County
The illegal retroactive pay,
as claimed by Commissioner
Stefani, is in accordance with
the union agreement, and is a
m a tte r of opinion and if
Commissioner Stefani thinks
the union agreement is illegal,
he should report the m atter to
the Grand Jury as it was
negotiated by Commissioner
Schum acher
and

missioner Telford in good faith
and upon advice from a deputy
of th e C lackam as County
District Attorney’s office.

respected for their differences
and God loves us all
We are very sorry to learn
that M r Park could not be used
as a voluntary teachers aide in
our schools This person is a
fine fam ily man, enjoys his
children and spends a lot of
time leaching them I, seems to
us that the school could use a
man of this caliber working
with the children So many
children are missing the father
image in their families and
need it for normal mental
growth.
The Sandy Post stated in the
paper that more voluntary
•eacher aides were needed but
if the school cannot accept a
person qualified like M r Park
some of the rest of us feel very
reluctant and unqualified to
volunteer

area, I want to thank all of the
mothers and students who

march. The drive was very
successful in the area, and the
businesses of Sandy were a big
help with their enthusiasm and
support.
The grade school children
saw the March of Dimes film
“ Keep on Walking" and they all
loved it. The Welches grade
school children are having
class competition to see which
class can come up with the
most money fo r the figh t
against b irth defects. The
winning class will be awarded
an extra field trip this year
