"Safety" m eans a 4 -w h ee l drive school bus in snow
When you live in the Mt Hood
area, roads covered with snow
is a constant problem facing
d riv e rs during the w in te r
months This is even more of a
problem for Welches Grade
School District
The mountain area grade
school transports moat of the
school's 275 students to and
from school, every day often
over roads which never see a
snow plow during the winter
months
The district in 1971 decided to
meet the problems of bad roads
with a four-wheel drive bus
“We bought the 36 passenger
bus to insure the safety of our
youngsters,** said d is tric t
superintendent-principal Earl
Covey.
“When in use, the bus has a 40
mile route that takes it up and
down many of the back roads.'
said Covey. “ These roads never
get plowed and without the
four-wheel drive the youngster
would have to walk down to the
main road during the snow
season ”
The district also has three 66
passenger buses it uses to help
transport the students
The fo u r-w heel
bus
is
equipped with tire chains, but
never have they been needed,
according to Covey.
The bus is equipped with
special gear to protect against
the p ossib ility of the bus
becoming stuck and the oc
cupants having to wait out a
storm.
The special equipment in
cludes oversized h ea te rs ,
lights, and other extra heavy
duty
equipm ent

“H ie bus cost the district
$11.300 and 1 feel it has proven
its worth everytime we have
used it,” said Covey.
The district has also had a
safety bar installed to help
students climb into the bus
"The first step on the bus is
higher than the other regular
buses and many of our first and
second graders were having
problems reaching the first
step.” said Covey. “ This bar
helps them pull themselves up
the first step into the bus ”
Bill Lukens is the driver of
this special bus and he agrees
with Covey that the bus has
proven its worth during the
snow season
“ One of the biggest ad
vantages this bus gives the
district.” said Covey, “ is the
ability to go off the beaten track
to pick up students and to avoid
traffic jams caused by no
traction on the snow Or in
other words, safety "
