John Woodward likes to teach
out-of-doors
He is an instructor of an
thropology and sociology at Mt
Hood Community College
One of his favorite courses.
Oregon Archaeology, allows
him many hours to teach
outside
The summer course, offered
for a second time at MHCC,
involved digging for artifacts,
8:30 am . - 5 p.m., every
Tuesday and Thursday
The class spent five weeks
digging at two sites One is near
Barton Park on the Clackamas
River The other is near the
town of Eagle Creek, also along
the Clackamas River
“We were at the first site
longer." said Woodward "It
had been the location of an
Indian village about the time of
Lewis and Clark the early
MOO'S."
No previous digging had been
done at the site. It was on
private property
“The owners were always
most eager to help They un
derstood the educational
value."
The Barton Park site
produced a variety of objects
some Indian stonework and
European trade items
“We uncovered an iron ax
from Fort Vancouver-the
Hudson Bay Trading Post This
was the type of object used for
trading with the Indians,"
Woodward noted
Woodward conducted in
formal lectures and discussions
at the digging sites “It was
learning by doing-and we all
enjoyed it.”
