fascinating place. Waha. Ida
There is a small tavern there
that was built in 1892. and is
still the original building It is
filled with some very in
teresting things of bygone
years, including a sterling
silver chastity belt. Something
you certainly don't see this day
and age In fact, there was one
of our group that didn't know
what it was, but I won't tell on
her They do quite a business in
the
winter
with
the
snowmobilers Mr and Mrs
Jim Daniel, who run the store,
are in the process of building a
huge shed which will hold over
100 snowmobiles Mrs Daniel
also took us out to the ice cave
This is a cave dug into the side
of the hill that retains a tem
perature between 30 and 40 all
year around, and where they
keep their beer and soft
drinks The ice cave has a bar
in it also which they are
planning on restoring
Took pictures of all this, then
off to Waha Lake Not a large
lake but beautiful
From there to the deserted
town of Winchester, toured
through all the old buildings,
and got some barb wire for
Tula Then back to camp
Arrived at Wallowa Lake
campground early Friday
That afternoon we took the
Gondola ride to show everyone
the Seven Devil mountains
Everyone, but Dave and I
took off for home on Sunday
morning Sure was quiet
without anyone to crack jokes
at anymore Dave and 1 took off
for Rich., id to visit with Pat
and Bob Matheson
On the way we stayed
overnight at the Blackhorse
Campground on the Imnaha
River Only one other couple in
the entire campground Shirley
and Penny Pennington from
Fremont. Calif
Shirley is Chief Deputy at the
Fremont Court House
Arrived at Pat and Bob's
early Monday They are
remodeling their entire house
and are in a bit of upheaval but
that didn’t bother us one bit.
We left for Baker the next
day after lunch We visited with
Dave's sister in Baker for a few
hours then off to Phillips Lake
about 18 miles out of Baker
Wednesday we went to Sump
ter Dave wanted me to see the
gold dredge and all the piles of
rock it had left Miles of it.
We visited The Black Market
Antique shop, bought a book on
gold panning Took off a side
road to Bourne This is an old
abandoned mining town, the
few houses that are fit to live in
are used by hunters and
snowmobilers

heritage Bourne, named after
Senator Jonthan Bourne J r of
Portland who was intensely
interested in Northeast Oregon
mining, is located almost in the
geographical center of the
North Pole Columbia Lode is
the most extensive gold lode in
N ortheastern Oregon The
combined continuous ore body
is thought to have produced
$9.000.000 in gold Today ac
tivity is sporadic and limited
Spent most of the afternoon
here as it was most interesting
Thursday morning decided to
head home

Just heard that Forney and
Bemice Buchanen had recently
sold their store at Fairview and
retired They moved to Hood
River, for a little peace and
quiet and what happens They
were robbed again Two such
nice people have just had more
than their share of holdups We
hope that this is the last and
they can now relax
