Should a 12-mile stretch of the
Sandy River be placed under the
protective Scenic Waterways Act?
This question is very important to
the residents of this area and to the
many thousands of users of the
River.
The meeting tonight at Sandy
Grade School will discuss this issue.
The meeting starts at 7:30.

McGovern Will Be No Pushover
The controversial views of George
McGovern have led some political
experts to predict he'll be easy
pickings for Richard Nixon come
November.
We don't think so.
A lot of people in the USA today are
unhappy about a lot of things, and
inevitably, this dissatisfaction is
shouldered by the incumbent.
McGovern is a shrewd enough
politician to capitalize on the war in
Viet-Nam, on the still-struggling
economy, on the ITT affair, on
whatever mistakes Nixon has made
Nixon, on the other hand, largely
must defend It's a great deal easier
to attack then to defend
McGovern made an early tactical
error with some poor arithmetic on
his tax proposals One day. he said
they'd cost $27 million. He refigured
and admitted to $60 million. Wilbur
Mills says more likely $69 million
However, his advisors will surely
gloss over those aberrations in the
weeks ahead.
Nixon may well beat McGovern;
that remains to be seen. But we think
the contest is going to be a lot closer
than the politicians are now saying.
No Remedy for the Problem
The Farm Bureau initiative which
Seeks to remove property taxes as a
fcasis for support of public schools
simply is not the solution to soaring
taxes.
The initiative, if approved, would
remove the financial support for
schools without providing any
alternative. You can’t run schools on
hot air or blue sky; they need money.
The initiative doesn’t speak to that
problem.
Moreover, home-owners would get
only a minor share of the relief thus
provided. Business and industry pay
about two-thirds of property taxes
and obviously would get the most
relief
Property taxes are too high and the

Letters to the Editor
If I would demand equal time
or space to reply to snide
rem arks about the Alder Creek
project it would take up too
much space, but first I would
like to compliment the un
complaining people that live on
the construction site that have
had to put up with muddy
driveways in winter, dust in
summer, and water shutoffs
while new lines are being in
stalled There has been a lot of
extra expense trying to keep
these conditions at a minimum
The heavy traffic problem is
such that the men take their
lives in their hands every day
and the people that make a lot
of unnecessary trips daily do
not improve that problem.
The men do not go home
because it rains and they don't
want to get wet, but because the
grade gets too soft for the
heavy equipment and there
isn’t one man that wouldn't love
to be em ployed the year
around
As soon as this project is
initiative is attractive politically. It
may well be approved.
But if it is, someone is going to have
to come up with a solution for school
financing . . . and soon. The initiative
measure doesn’t.
Approval of the initiative obviously
would force the legislature to im
mediate action. Some sort of new tax
would be mandatory.
But unfortunately, the only two
available routes would be a sales tax
or a sharply increased income tax
These probably are no more palatable
than the property tax to most tax
payers.
Scuttling the property tax doesn’t
answer the problem

What would make more sense,
politically, than for a sort of coalition
ticket, Nixon and Connolly running
together? There are even those who
say Connolly would not have to give
up his identity as a Democrat under
such a plan.
Many D em ocrats are deeply
disturbed over the McGovern can
didacy and they might very easily
embrace a Nixon-Connolly ticket.
Politics do, indeed, make strange
bedfellows and the prospect of a
lifelong Democrat on the Republican
ticket is no pipe dream.

Sunday is the morning to take your
family out for breakfast. The Sandy

The affair features a great break

airplanes. Also airplane rides are
available during the day for a
reasonable charge.
The pilots flying here for the affair
will be donating their own time to
help the Kiwanis out in their fund

It’s a fun event, and you get a good
meal. See you there.

A Nixon-Connolly Ticket?
Nomination by the Democrats of
Sen. George McGovern makes more
likely, it seems to us, a Nixon-
Connolly ticket for the Republicans in
November
Rumors have floated for many
months that Vice-Pres. Agnew might
be replaced Pres Nixon obviously
would do nothing to confirm these
reports
But McGovern’s presence on the
Democratic ticket changes the pic
ture. A great many Democrats do not
care for McGovern’s radical ideas.
Southern Democrats, in particular,
are philosphically much closer to the
