sponsored
by
Congressman A1 Ullman to
repeal federal re g istra tio n
requirements on .22 caliber
rim fire ammunition was ap
proved by the Ways and Means
Committee this week, it was
announced Friday.
A sm ilar bill by Ullman
passed the House last year but
died in the Senate’s year-end
legislative logjam.
The bill has not yet been
scheduled for debate in the
House but Ullman said he
thought it would be brought up
within a month.
"The most popular sporting
ammunition used in the country
is .22 caliber rim fire ,” Ullman
said. "About 4.3 billion rounds
are sold by over 150,000 dealers
every year.” For this reason,
Ullman said, it is impossible to
trace the ammunition from
manufacture or sale to actual
use.
The Justice Department has
said the voluminous records of
.22 caliber ammunition sales
are virtually worthless from a
law enforcem ent viewpoint,
Ullman noted.
"This is the first important
step toward ending this un
necessary
and
onerous
requirement,” Ullman said.
He said the law has only
served to hinder and harass
law-abiding citizens who enjoy
hunting and other outdoor
sports.
In a letter recommending
enactment of Ullman’s bill,
Deputy A ttorney General
Richard G. Kleindienst said his
department has not received a
single case from the Treasury
Department fo r prosecution
resulting from am m unition
records.
Incomplete returns indicate
Oregon com m unity college
enrollm ent has reached a
record high, State Superin
tendent Dale P arnell an
nounced Friday.
R egistration at the 13
schools, according to unofficial
figures reported this week, has
climbed to 56,982.
"E n ro llm e n t is running
su bsta ntia lly ahead of last
year,” said Carrol deBroekert,
Oregon Board of Education
associate
superintendent.
“ We’ve projected 63,000 and we
don’t think the projection w ill
be far o ff.”
The returns are far from
being complete as most of the
schools have not completed
re g is tra tio n . For example,
Lane Com m unity College
began registration later than
planned because of the levy
election. And, too, several of
the schools have unique open
enrollment policies allowing
students to enroll at various
times in the term.
Incom plete and unofficial
figures reported this week are:
Blue Mountain 1,485; Central
Oregon 1,380; Chemeketa 4,723;
Clackamas 3,117; Clatsop
1,622, Lane 8,310; Linn-Benton
