Tom Dick Ridge, which by the
way, is another beautiful hike.
You probably have hiked into
Mirror Lake. This time, try
going on up the Tom Dick Ridge
Trail. It will take you almost to
the top, where you can leave
the trail and hike along the top
of the ridge in open alpine
country. Good wildflowers, and
a fantastic view of Mt. Hood.
If you wish to find out more
about these, and other little
used trails, call or stop at the
Zigzag Ranger Station.

This loop could be made an
overnight trip if you want. The
Zigzag Mtn. area abounds with
alpine meadows, beautiful
views, and has quite a variety
of different trails. The use is not
heavy. See map for road and
trail numbers.

places on the District where
they are now ripe. You could

Most trails are now oDen
open and
clear of snow and are in good
hiking condition, according to
the Forest Service at Zig Zag.
Some of the higher trails still
| have snow drifts along side the
trails but crews have been out
m aintaining the trails for
hikers.
Alpine Campground is now in
use and Phlox Point should be
open as soon as the snow melts
there.
Many of the trails go through
some very beautiful country.
Many of them afford some
leisurely overnight trips. How
about some quick access high
country for your hike: You can
drive to Devil’s Meadow
Campground (be careful,
though, as this road is rather
narrow and quite dusty in
spots). This puts you near the
top of Zigzag Mtn., where you
can camp for one night. The
next morning you have a
variety of hiking trips available
to you.
The Cast Lake Trail is a short
hike through alpine meadows.
Or you can take a longer loop
trip by hiking to the Horseshoe
Ridge Trail and down to the
West Zigzag Mtn. trail, thence
back to your car at Devil’s
Meadow.
