Locai retired couple enjoys hobbies SANDY, OREGON, THURSDAY, JUNE 17. 1971 Section Two i Dad to have his day Sunday This Sunday is the day that Dad is king in his home The day that he gets his way and does whatever he wants. It also is a day when mem bers of the family reflect on their relationship with “good old dad.” The following is a letter which was written to one dad in the Sandy area recently by his son The son now is a grown man himself, but he remem bers the importance which his dad had in his growing up years. Dear Dad; What with F a th e r ’s Day coming up, I got to thinking about Dads and kids and all the fuss that's going on about the generation gap, and about you and me and our own private generation gap. I first noticed it when I was five, and didn't want to go to bed. You insisted, and right there I knew there was some kind of a gap between us. The next time I noticed it was when I reach ed over and snagged the biggest chunk of cake. There was company with us and you spoke right up there in front of all those people and said it wasn’t very nice to grab the biggest piece for myself. That was embarrassing, you know. Then when I was twelve and knew I could run the car without waiting until I was 17, you let the gap show again The driver’s seat was declared off limits for me. You said you thought it would be better if I waited until I had taken drivers training in school. At fourteen I still had to be in the house by ten, and earlier on school nights. Was that ever embarrassing with the gang! And besides you insisted on DOUBLE GREEN STAMPS With All Purchases Thursday, Friday and Saturday June 17th-18th 19th Featuring Admiral Appliances O M M - I A i t «£& knowing where I was going. What a gas! And there were chores I had to do, when the other guys were out playing ball, and church to attend when the boys were going fishing. But, you know what? The other night we guys were talking things over. They were sort of sounding off on all the things they’d done, and all of a sudden I felt like there was something wrong. They didn’t sound really happy and it was just bragging. One guy looked at me when he remarked that his parents wouldn't care if he “never" showed up at home. Suddenly Dad, I knew where the generation gap was. It wasn’t between you and me. I knew th at you c a re d —th at you’d care a lot if I never showed up at home I felt real good inside, a solid, com fortable feeling. I guess that’s what Dads are for, to give a kid something solid that he can depend on when everything all around him is shifting gears so fast and you can’t always tell who your best friend is. Anyway, I wanted you to know about the cake, the car, and the dozens of other No’s you’ve passed out to me. It’s O K. Dad. You’re the best Dad a kid ever had. Proudly, with love, Your Son MRS.
