Baja, Mexico. an orphanage 10 miles beyond Bennie Puckett and his wife Winnie were asked to help counsel and supervise a group of 120 high school and college students who spent their spring vacation doing much needed work at the orphanage Forty adults, including W illard Wanvig. a teacher at Concord Elem entary School and Richard Wanvig. a teacher at Boring Elem entary School, accompanied the group, who went in 25 private vehicles. The work group included students from Camas and Vancouver, Wash., Portland, M ilw aukie, Oregon C ity, Albany, Eugene, Springfield, The Dalles, Maupin, and Sacramento, Calif. The Mexican personnel do lot have the know-how, the jquipment, nor the time to do 1 new construction or the up-keep that needs to be done. Thus, all such work is done by volunteer groups that come to Ensenada and pay all their own expenses. These young people paid $50 each to take part in this work project plus paying their own expenses to and from the Mexican border. Work projects included finishing a barn and machine shop-manual training center that was started by another group, installing a drain field and the painting of buildings inside and out. Two ladies took their sewing machines and home economic students repaired and made new clothes for the children and 250 N.E. Hood personnel. Plumbing, showers, and wash sinks were installed. On Wednesday 121 of the group went deep-sea fishing and hit a school of barracuda. Twenty-five gunny sacks of fish were caught before the time lim it ran out The fish were still biting when they went back to the dock The fish ranged from 20 to 30 inches in length and weighed 3 or 4 pounds. The 160 members of the group had all the fish they could eat, and over 1,200 pounds were put into the freezers at the orphanage, enough to last them for about nine months. One boy caught 56 fish. Puckett commented, " I t is the first time 1 have ever had to use a wheel barrow to take fish to the deep-freeze." The Mexicans cleaned the fish before the boat got back to the dock At the orphanage an assembly line of ten people working in continuous shifts took over six hours to cut the catch into pieces, wash, drain, pack in bags and boxes and take it to the freezers in a wheel barrow. Puckett took about 100 slides and 10 rolls of movie film . No. 72 Portland General Electric company has announced 1971 opening dates for company- owned park and recreation areas. Jim Goggin, com m unity relations m anager, said Promontory and Pelton parks w ill open on April 23, while Roslyn lake, River M ill, Austin Hot Springs, Harriet Lake, Round Butte observatory and N orth F ork fish-view ing gallery begin operations on April 24. Roslyn lake w ill be open on weekends only until May 29. A weekend-only schedule also w ill be in effect until June 12 for the Round Butte observatory. Faraday Lake and Roslyn lake remain open all year for fishing. Beginning April 1, PGE w ill accept reservations for the use of campsites at Pelton park, located on the Deschutes river west of Madras, and at Prom ontory park, on the Clackamas east of Estacada. Campsites in these two parks may be reserved for up to seven days in any 10-day period at a user fee of $1.50 per night. Reservations are not taken and user fees are not required at other PGE campgrounds. Picnicking at all PGE parks and recreation areas remains free of charge and requires no r e s e r v a tio n . L a rg e organizations may reserve group areas at Lake Roslyn park for a modest fee. JU LY 1. i * 2 L SANDT RURAL F I RE PROTECTION DISTRICT # 7 2 The Vocational Department of Sandy High School plans an inform a l com m unity open house April 19, from 7-9 p.m. Materials and equipment w ill be displayed in the following rooms: Wood shop, Charles Fraisier, dept. head; Business education, Miss Barbara Beehler and Miss M ary Wooley, and Jack Manning; home economics, Mrs. Gary Larsen, and Mrs. James Wolf; agriculture. Lee Cole; elec tronics, W illiam Meyers; m etals. Del Rader; power mechanics. Jack Peebler; arts and crafts, Gary Connelly. Faculty members w ill be available to discuss their areas of interest with visitors. No formal program is planned for the open house. This is an excellent op portunity for parents to share th e ir ideas on vocational education with staff members. Parents of Sandy area eighth graders are especially urged to attend the open house to meet the teachers and to learn about the vocational program offered to their children Community members interested in the type b f vocational training given SUHS students are also en couraged to attend Jim Parten from L ittle Village Studio at Troutdale is the new instructor for the art class held Monday's from 9 a m till 12 at Women's Club Hall Nineteen painters and two visitors were present on April 5.
