bandy beats SH, falls to St. Helens
The Sandy basketball team is
coming off a 92-55 pounding
from St Helens Tuesday night
and now will face Canby there
F riday and sta te ranked
LaSalle at G ladstone on
Tuesday night.
Both games will be tough
according to coach Jim Kitchen
with the LaSalle game extra
tough due to the strong showing
they have had so far.
In the St Helens game the
Pioneers were in it until half
time when they fell behind 46-27
after gaining an 18-18 tie at the
end of the first quarter.
leading scorer for Sandy was
Steve Buhler with 13 points.
Other scorers were Rick
Zimmerman 7, Ray Perkins 6,
Terry Cansler 7, Mike Leary 5,
Dean Dickinson 9, Randy
Ackers 2, Rob Bignall 4 and Pat
Sutton 2.
Sandy made only 22 of 70
shots from the field and St.
Helens made 38 of 72 shots as
this was the big difference,
stated Kitchen.
It was just the opposite in the
game Fridav.
The Sandy Pioneer basket
ball team took advantage of the
poor shooting of the team from
Sweet Home Friday to take a
70-56 win.
The win was the second of the
season for the junior-heavy
Sandy team and according to
pioneer coach Jim Kitchen
“one we needed very badly.”
The Pioneer’s shot 42 per cent
from the field and 65 per cent
from the free throw line while
the visiting team from Sweet
Home only hit 27 per cent from
the field and 45 per cent from
the charity line.
Kitchen said one of the im
portant factors in his team ’s
victory was the play of Ray
Perkins off the bench.
Perkins ended the game with
11 points and 11 rebounds
giving the Pioneers that second
man on the boards which
Kitchen has been looking for to
help Rick Zimmerman who
pulled down one more than his
average in the SH gam e with 16
rebounds. He also hit for 14
points.
Leading scorers for the
Sandy team was Steve Buhler
the high scoring senior guard
who hit for 15 points in this
Coast Valley League game.
At one point in the final
period Sandy held SH scoreless
for over four minutes as the
lead grew from five points to a
comfortable 20 points at one
time.
Other scorers for Sandy were
Terry Cansler 7 points, Mike
Leary 6, Dean Dickinson 11,
Mike Leary 6, Randy Ackers 2,
Rob Bignall 4, Pat Sutton
