POST Pioneers Bow to Eagles For Second Wilco Loss By M IKE H ITE , Sandy s hopes for a football v ie o r y r l ay n ig h t evaporated or rather died slowly, inside its own 35-yard line as Wy East utilized a solid defense, a crunching ground game and two touchdowns in 22 seconds late in the second quarter to dump the Pioneers 26-0 at Pop Rannow Field. The Eagles’ two lightening strikes came on passes from quarterback Phil Smith to Mike Phelps for yards, and to Tom Willis for 45 yards, with Willis crossing the double stripe with less than a minute to go in the firsthaif. nprfe°Hv eveTit'piT on a perfectly executed onside kick which was recovered by Bill Bayles on the Sandy 45. Bayles Pioneer tackle Ron Lance Cochran recovered fu llb a c k Roger Williams’ second first quarter fumble on the Pioneer 34 to set up the Eagles’ first touchdown. Sandy must make considerable improvement to be considered a threat. Reynolds - 21, Wy’east - 14... This could be the top game of the week. Both teams have fine offenses and are strong on defense. But the Eagles don’t have a fullback like Randy Pattock, which will make the difference for the No. 9 rated Lancers. Central • 27, Canby • 0... The No. 16 rated Panthers really surprised a lot of people, including myself, last week by having the Crusaders on the ropes for so long before letting o ff with 11 seconds left. The Panthers’ Mike Russ is one of the best quarterbacks in the state and his presence should be enough to offset Canby’s attack. The Dalles - 14, Molalla - 6.... The Dalles really came on last week against Canby and unveiled quite a passing attack led by Q.B. Mike Carpenter. Molalla should give T.D . a battle but will come out on the short end of the score.
