Land values have increased dramatically over the past few year» in Clackamas County. This increase in land value has been enjoyed by land owners all across the country and in c e rta in areas values have increased spectacularly in just a couple of years. 1 had an opportunity recently to visit Fife, Wash., which is located between Seattle and Tacoma on Interstate Highway 5. This c o m m u n ity has been an intensely farmed area by fresh market vegetable gardners for a long period of time and a good many growers are still active in the area. The expansion o f the Boeing Company and the increase of population in the Seattle area has effected all the communitites which surround Seattle. To many o f the farmers who were along in age and anxious to retire, this was a boon to them, and they were able to sell their land at high prices and benefited greatly from this. However, all is not rosy for those farmers who do not wish to sell their land and who want to continue to farm n ow fin d in g them selves trapped by the increased land value and the accompanying high taxes. In the community of Fife last year land sold for $9,000 an acre, and $5,000 an acre was considered to be a bargain. Promoters, speculators and businessmen flocked to the countryside to help farmers decide what they would do with their land, and all kinds of ideas and developments were being talked about. All o f this happened last year and farmers in that area now report an entirely different situation this There notable y ear - A rm y F irs t Lieutenant absence of speculators and far it will go and its impact Richard L.
