Olga
Luciano, Sandy High School’s
AFS
student from Santo
Domingo, is accustomed to a
much more humid and warmer
climate.
Olga speaks English very
fluently, although Spanish is
her native language. In addition
to three years o f English in
high school, she also took two
years o f French, but feels you
learn a language best when you
must use it in communication.
Very friendly and outgoing,
Oiga accepts life as it comes
and enjoys every moment o f it.

Although Olga first thought
o f coming to the United States
last October j t was not until 15
days before she le ft home that
she actually knew she was
coming to Sandy to live with
the Reckmanns. T h e students
from the Dominican Republic
were to leave Aug. 1 but their
departure was delayed until
Aug. 15. One boy from Santa
Domingo learned only the day
before departure where he was
going and the fam ily he would
be living with in the U.S.! Olga
entered the U.S. at Florida,
taking a bus from Miam i to
Kansas and then flying from
Kansas to Denver then to
Portland.
As many foreign students,
Olga was told to “ steer clear o f

and also the public feelings
toward the U.S. in Santa

was also
interesting to learn that Peace
