T h e students from the Dominican Republic were to leave Aug. 1 but their departure was delayed until Aug. 15. One boy from Santa Domingo learned only the day before departure where he was going and the fam ily he would be living with in the U.S.! Olga entered the U.S. at Florida, taking a bus from Miam i to Kansas and then flying from Kansas to Denver then to Portland. As many foreign students, Olga was told to “ steer clear o f the mention o f communism and also the public feelings toward the U.S. in Santa D o m in g o . It was also interesting to learn that Peace Corps workers in her country were thought o f as “ spies” by many o f her countrymen. To d a te no m a jo r misunderstanding has arisen over word usage or word meaning with the exception o f one a fte rn o o n when her American mother asked Olga “ Do you make your own soap at home?” Olga thought she said “ soup” and since soup was then being made on the Reckmann’s kitchen stove, it seemed a logical question to ask at th e t im e . The conversation on the subject continued between them until the gap became too wide on the ingredients needed to make the finished product, and then it was discovered that Olga was talking about “ soup” while her A m e r ic a n m o th e r was discussing “ soap.” Mrs. Earl Meier o f Boring by the Oregon Purebred Dairy was one o f the entrants o f the Association.
