New head coach Jim Turin
in h e rite d
te n le tte rm e n ,
including seven regulars, from
last year’s Wilco league fourth
place team as basic material for
his first season as Sandy’s head
football coach.
But this is not quite as solid
as it sounds, because two of
th e
d e p a rte d
re g u la rs
accounted for over two-thirds
o f the Pioneers’ 1,532 yards
gained last season.
Fortunately for Turin, his
o ffe n s iv e system
spreads
backfield responsibility around
and he does have potential
standout replacements.
Quarterback will again be
senior Jim Martin (5-10, 170),
who logged most o f the game
time last season. Martin, a two
year letterman, excels at calling
a u d ib le s at the line of
scrimmage.
Rick Bell, last year’s starting
J.V. quarterback, will probably
back Martin.

halfback-fullback combination
equal to any in the Wilco
league ..seniors Brent Peterson
and Roger Williams, who were
both starters as sophs.
Peterson (6 -0 ,1 9 5 ) is a hard
runner with great speed (10.1
in the 100), who has scored 74
points in two years at SUHS
and was a second in rushing
last year. A definite all-league
c a n d id a te w ho
punishes
tacklers and contributes his
share of blocking as well as
being a threat for the “bomb”
on pass receptions, he also is
the place kick specialist.
Williams (6-1, 190) was
switched to fullback this year
after a stint at offensive end
last year. But the position is
not entirely new to him as he
played this spot half of his
sophomore year. He’s also the
Pioneers’ punter and could
wind up his high school career
with a big year.
The other halfback spot is
ilso strong with lettermen
Dean Phelps (5-9, 175) and
junior Dennis Weisen (6-0,
185). Both have break away
possibilities and whichever one

is in there will complement the
other three backs.
The receiving corps was
dented by graduation, but
should
be adequate with
Peterson, Phelps and Weisen
and returning ends Dale Sliger
and Leion Verdoom.
Sliger (6-1, 165) is a fine
receiver, who is adept on the
short patterns.
Verdoom (6-1, 185) is a
strong blocker at tight end and
is also a good runner.
Arte Larson (6-3, 180) and
Randy Ackers (6-1, 180), both
juniors, will add depth.
The front line is solid, with
Wilco honorable mention Ron
Boyles (6-0, 195), and Randy
Huserik (6-1, 210 at tackles.
Pushing them is junior Larry
T h o m a s (6-0, 190), Paul
Wunische (5 -1 1 ,1 8 0 ), and Don
Pullen (5-10, 185), at guards
and Steve Fantenbein (5-10,
195) at center.
Sandy’s defense consists o f
essentially the same personnel,
indicating that many players
will go both ways.

Wunische are one of the
defense’s strong suits.
Tackles Boyles and Huserik,
who both merit all-league
attention, is another strong
suit. Guards Gantenbein and

Sliger go into the first game as
starting ends.

fullback Mike Pattock (5-10,
201), Mu<uterback Van Jackson
(5-11, 170), halfbacks Billy
Kostraba (6-0, 175) and John
Miner (5 -1 1 ,1 7 5 ).
The Pioneers, however, will
not have to contend with
halfback Speedster Mark Terris
,6-1, 190), who is shelved with
an ankle injury.
The Lancers algo have fine
receivers in Bob Moore and Jay
Jacobsen.
Others who should be
watched are linebacker John
Moody (5 -1 0 ,1 7 0 ), a cousin to
Chuck Moody, Sandy defensive
halfback of last year; and guard
Don Ashoff (5 -1 0 ,1 7 0 ).
Oddly enough, Reynold’s
line will be small this year,
which is quite a contrast from
last year when it averaged out
at about 210. But, as always, it
will be extremely quick and
tough.
Onf more thing, and to
Sandy’s advantage, will be that
for the first time in five years
the Lancers will not have a
fe llo w
by the name o f
Woodward playing fullback for
them.

Panthers have two of the best
in the state, quarterback Mike
Buss and 270 pound Lloyd
Graves. These two, plus a few
other returnees, make Central
strong again.
The Foxes’ big man is
tailback Steve Herr, honorable
mention all-state last year. I f
Silverton can hold down Buss,
they can win, but it’s doubtful
that they can.
