The single flowers also have but five petals. The tall growing habits ot this plant limit its use in the garden, as it often gets to 14 feet. The canes have no bristles, but do carry a few thorns, and are weak for their great length. Here they must either have a lot of room or something to lean on. My cultivated specimen is still too young to determine exactly what it will do in the garden. The cluster flowering habit of this rose leads to clusters o f brilliant red hips in the fail. These are quite long lasting and m ake good highlights for autumn bouquets. Also, in our woods, can be found the Nutka rose, Rosa Nutkana. Flowers on this four to five foot bush may be as much as three inches across and also of a rose pink hue. It is noticably fragrant. The five petalled flowers are borne singly. This one does not seem to be as common locally, and I have yet to locate one small enough to move into the garden. Because of its larger flower size, this species could be the mo6t promising one to cultivate. It is very prickly and difficult to handle without leather gloves. R. rubiginosa, the renowned Sweetbriar ot England, or E g la n tin e , as Shakespeare wrote of it, was once planted extensively in the Willamette valley. Liking the climate and soils, it has escaped and made itself at home in woodland edges and natural hedgerows bordering the valley farms, This is a true pink single rose I of 2 inch diameter that flowers in great profusion. When space allows, the plant itself is like a great 12’ fountain of arching canes with bright green foliage, The foliage is the source o f the Sweetbriar name as it has a fr u ity a r o m a t ic scent resembling ripe apples. POWELL GRESHAM g j l THOUGHT FOR THE W E E K S by KEN BATEMAN A»k not what your country can do lor you, but ask what y°u can do lor your country." let's paraphrase President Ken- nedy's thought let's take out the word 'country' and replace it with the word 'people' . . . "W hat can I do lor people, instead o( people doing something (or me?" . . . By and large, we are a generous people. Whenever catastrophe strikes, when Hoods, famine or destruction occur, we unhesitat ingly step forward and give substantial help However, this sort of help is given mostly when publicized disaster occurs. If more of us took a close look ot the unpublicized tragedy in most of the world, it would give us a jolt. Many people believe in the legend that God helps him who helps himself. This is true—in cases. In other cases it is not true. What person, for example can honestly say thot 88% of our people own TV sets just because God helped us to help our selves. There are other reasons. We Intend to explore them in later thoughts. Watch for them. BATEMAN FUNERAL CHAPEL, 520 W.
