Hood Community College Budget Committee was held April 10 at the college. Dr. George Casterline was elected chairman o f the committee. The 1 9 6 9 -7 0 budget document was distributed to committee members to be further studied prior to discussion at the second budget the meeting of committee April 24. The college tax base is $875,000 which makes up the local share for the operation o f the college. Cost to the individual taxpayer will be approximately 96 cents per $1000 true cash value for operation. Last year’s cost was about 88 cents. For a $15,000 home, the tax for college operation would be approximately $14.40. Funds for construction o f college buildings are provided by the recent bond issue. uilding Booms EXTERIOR OF THE 58,000 square foot health and physical education building reflects modern architecture and is done in cement. The facility currently serves as a multi purpose unit along with the occupational educational building. The college also has completed a one-tenth mile long vocational technical facility. Medical Program To Begin in Fall Mt. H o o d C om m unity C o lle g e is d evelop in g a tw o -y ea r Associate Degree program to train inhalation therapy technicians starting in Fall 1969. The program will prepare students to enter the medical field as technicians in this specialized field. ‘‘As medical techniques grow more com plex, it is increasingly difficult for the doctor to perform all o f the functions o f modern medical care. In order to meet this contingency, a new profession o f trained technicians has been developed to serve as valuable a ssista n ts to the medical profession. They are called allied health assistants or specialists," according to Arnie H e u c h e rt, d ir e c t o r o f Professional and Technical Education. The general education core o f th is program requires courses in English, anatomy, physiology, chemistry, physics, m a th , m icr o b io lo g y , and p s y c h o l o g y . S p e c ia liz e d Board Commends College Author The Mt. Hood Community College board o f education commended Paul Tolomen, a s s is ta n t d ir e c to r of professional and technical education, for an article recently published in the March 1969 issue of Education Leadership. This is the second article p ub lish ed by Tolomen. Entitled "The Pedagogic Numbers Game,” it is a comment on the inadequacies o f the present grading system. courses within this framework also include inhalation therapy t h e o r y , and in h a la tio n application. T he field o f inhalation therapy is comparatively new and expanding rapidly with today’s ever-changing medical technology. With this rapid growth the need for trained technicians is also increasing. Upon completion of the Mt. H ood C< mmunity College two-year program in inhalation therapy, the trained student may expect a beginning salary of $400 a month moving to $700 upon passing the registry examination by the state. Hood Community College has received funding authorization to develop a program for Social Welfare Assistant, Dr. Leo Mariantes, dean o f instruction, reported Thursday at the board of education meeting. Hood Community College board o f education took action Thursday night to proceed with drawings and go to bid on the college Technical Arts building which is planned to be ready for occupancy by Fall quarter. The $300,000 building will p ro v id e m uch needed classroom space in lieu of procuring temporary trailer housing. Completion o f the main academic center will also give more space for technical programs. The Technical Arts building is to be o f concrete and wood construction which will tie in with other wood structures planned on the campus. The majority o f the buildings are to be o f concrete and steel. The academic center is to be brick masonry. Footings for the main academic center and some of the mall level flooring are being poured now, according to Don Lutes, college architect. The addition to the physical education building will be completed by July 1, 1970 and the library is scheduled for an August, 1971 completion date.
