sidewalks. From there it is
washed into the sewer system,
mixed with river water at the
treatment plant and most o f it
ends up in the river.
The Red Cedar has been
monitored for three years at 14
s ta tio n s .
P e s tic id e
c o n c e n tr a tio n s co u ld be
measured in farming areas as
well as above and below
treatment plants. Samples were
taken from the river bottom,
to measure long term effects
and from suspended matter
for day-to-day contamination
measurement.
Further investigations were
made in three other streams
during the summer o f 1968.

entomologist, found that 60-80
p ercen t
of
p e s tic id e
contamination entering the
Red Cedar River comes from
waste water treatment plants
w ith 20-40 percent from
agricultural pesticide use.
Zabik explains that when
farm cr o p s are sprayed,
pesticides are absorbed by the
soil. Through runoff and soil
erosion, some residue will
