Short Local quality of the fishing is assured. In some of Pennsylvania’ s most famed Brown T rout w aters, the n o -k ill stream has been effecti ve and popular. Here in Oregon, it has been highly successful on Hosmer Lake, where fly fishing with barbless hooks only is allowed fo r A t lantic Salmon. A ll must be re turned unharmed to the Lake. T his was also trie d on the M etolius last year, and this w rite r, fo r one, was a ll fo r it. And, I might add, 1 did have the fun of catching and releasing some la rg e r trout than usual in this section. The p a rticu la r section of the Metolius set aside as no k ill has in the past, been some ex cellent Brown tro u t w ater, but in recent years only sm all Browns could be had. Now, I learn, much to my chagrin, that th is n o -k ill policy has been dropped on the Metolius because it wasn’ t used enough. I would say it was not given a fa ir tr ia l. Given another two years and a population of larger trout would have b u ilt up in this stretch of the riv e r. Then it would be popular. If, with the ever expanding number of anglers that swell the ranks along the streams each year, we are to have true I Quality fishing, we must have m ore fly -o n ly waters on p ro ductive stream s. More re s tric tive bag lim its , and some no k ill waters are also going to enter the picture o r we w ill never succeed ln attaining the quality of fishing we could have.
