ROST Writing Contest Open to Youth The Department of Employ ment is placing information in the mail this week concern ing the 21st Annual Ability Counts Writing contest, spon sored in Oregon by the Gov ernor’* Committee on Employ- menlrof the Handicapped. «iiy Oregon high school jun ior or senior is eligible to en- jb r the contest which has Ore gon prizes totaling over $1,100 and national prizes totaling more than $2,500. The first place Oregon winner will be presented an expense - paid trip Washington, D. C. by the Ore gon AFL-CIO, This year’s theme for the writing contest is What Every Employer Should Know About Handicapped Workers. Entrants are required to write 750 words or less on this theme, after making a survey of their com munity as to the employability of handicapped persons. The contest is endorsed by the Secondary School Princi pals’ Assn., the State Depart ment of Education, Governor Tom McCall and the Governor’s Committee on Employment of the Handicapped. Deadline for submission of entries is Feb. 15, 1969. More details may be obtained from high school Eng lish and social studies teach e rs, or from Department of Employment offices. The State Senatehas30mem bers. The 1969 session will have 14 Republicans, 13 regu lar Democrats and three Demo crats who in past sessions have voted with the Republicans in organizing the Senate and elec ting its president. This means the regular Dem ocrats cannot elect a Senate president without the three Democrats who have joined the coalition in the past. If it becomes apparent Flegel cannot win the support of these three coalition Democrats, Morgan said he would then be come a candidate with the hope of gaining their support for the presidency. He made the statement after a Portland daily newspaper story had inferred he might join the coalition Democrats. In past sessions three Demo crats have voted with the Re publicans to give them control of the Senate. Flegel has been the leader of the regular Dem ocrats. At the last session E. Debbs Potts, Grants Pass Democrat, joined the Republicans and was elected president of the Senate. The other coalition Demo crats have been Glenn Huston, Lebanon, and Harry D.
