.4 Problem for the Republicans
With the election of Richard Nixon,
the Republican party is basking in
the heady glow of success.
But there are some sobering sides
to the recent election and we don’t
mean the already-overworked claim
that Nixon is a minority president.
We are referring to the fact that
despite a victory at the top of the
ticket (Nixon), the Republicans did
very little anywhere else. There were
some minor gains in the House and
Senate but nothing of any consequence.
The Democrats still control both
houses.
On the local level, the Republicans
maintained control of the Oregon
House of Representatives but couldn’t

claim the Senate.
It boils down, rather simply, to the
fact that the majority of the voters
still think--and vote--like Democrats
on the bread and butter local issues.
Another sobering fact is that the
Republicans failed to carry a single
big city. The Negro vote, amazingly
antagonistic to Nixon, is a part of
the answer, but the GOPs just haven't
found the key to the big cities.
Nixon obviously must do something
to reach the big-city voters. His cab

Madeline finally decided that
she had had enough. She started
a law suit against the children
and their parents seeking dam
ages for the harm done to her
property by the children run

fo r an injunction to stop the
children from coming onto her
property.
“ Our children weren’ t doing
any harm to her property,”
said the parents.
“ Children
certainly have a right to play
outside.”
Do you think Madeline can
prevent the children from play

Yes, said the court in just
such a situation. The children
had repeatedly and w illfully in

upon Madeline’s property. They
also threatened to continue such

The court also granted an in
