That’s the scene aroundSandy High. . . ,my source of In formation is primarily the Pioneer P ress. . .a newspaper I worked on when I attended Sandy High. . .1 feel the high school news Is of interest to Sandy servicemen living on bases miles away, toSandy stu dents attending colleges living away from Sandy, and to the citizens of Sandy who do not have students in high school but are interested in nes of students. For this reason, I feel it has a big place in the Sandy Scene and for this rea son I include Sandy High news. I recently received a letter from Lewis L. McArthur, son of the author of Oregon Geo graphic Names, who Is gather ing material for a revised and enlarged edition of the book. He visited Lige Coalman in Lattabra, California, and learned much of this area but «anted to know the origin or stories of some of the Sandy River drainage names: Ramona Falls, Old Maid Flat, Cape Horn and Last Chance Moun tain. Could anyone enlightenhim on any of these names? Also if there is an explanation for the Forest Service maps spelling Lenhart Butte with an “ e " rather than an “ I” as the Lin- hart family spells their name? I would be giad to relay any In formation on to Mr. McArthur and would appreciate any in formation any Post reader might have on these geographic names. Any of them sound fam iliar? Friends of Rene Churchill will be pleased to learn of the success of her recent ear op eration. On Sept. 20, a spec- las list In Portland operated on her ear as she was very hard of hearing and required ahear- ing aid. She was supposed to be able to determine If the op eration was a successs after about a month's recuperation period. . .but within 2 weeks she was hearing sounds she had never heard before and a whole new world has opened up for her. She now com templates an operation on the other ear in the spring. Her enthusiasm at hearing the sounds around her made me realize how very much those of us with hearing simply take for granted. . .and thus miss out much enjoyment, Rene Churchill’s new-found aprecla- tion for the world of sound also made me appreciate It m o re .. In reading last week, I d is covered an Interesting bit of information that I thought I would share: “ Old Mother Goose" was a real person whose maiden name was Foster. Born near Charleston, Mass., in 1665, she married Isaac Goose, who died years later, leavii« h e n a widow with 10 children. For the entertainment of her large family, she wrote a number of nursery rhymes, which were collected and published bv her son-in-law, Thomas Fleet. When Old Mother Goose died at the age of 91, she " a s buried in Od Granary Cemetery In Boston, where her grave may still be seen. Her nonsensical rhymes continue toenchant each new generation of children. I always thought the name Old Mother Goose originated in someone's vivid imagination.. FRIDAY, OCT. 25 8 :3 0 P.M .
