Memorial Honors Pioneer - - - Post THE (Continued from page 1) out in the rain. In those days the road was traveled by many seeking homes and gold In the West. In the spring of 1882. 30 wagons went through the gate In one party. The travelers had left Kansas because of the grasshopper plague, and were without money or supplies. ,t had been three-days since they had tasted bread or wheat flour. A large meat platter and a quilt were taken for toll. It was this party that lost an iron tire while camped at Summit Meadows, and Billy Welch who was visiting Perry Vick ers, who operated the trading post at Summit Meadows, found the iron tire, and ran two and one half miles to Government Camp because he knew the perils of the descent down Laurel Hill without the iron rim. The toll at the time was $2 per wagon and $1 per saddle horse, but was raised when im provements were made on the road. Spring freshets destroyed much of the road and took out the double bridges in 1883. It was seldom that any one trid to beat the toll, and Mrs. Thomas remembered that when one Tom Payne rode by on his mule, high on the hillside, Me- Gugin remarked that Tom was earning all he sftveds McGugin later built a shed on the rear of the toll house, where he kept baled hay and store supplies. Travelers were often allowed to sleep in the shed. The maple tree in front of the house still stands at the entrance to the camp grounds and as it has grown from a small sprig to a beautiful shade tree, the surrounding country has grown from wilderness to a beautiful rec reational center. — < J3REAT WAY THE " m t . hood p l a y g r o u n d !
